Apple and cheese together used to hit the spot for me. There is a clotted cream ice-cream in Sainsbury's which was pretty good too; I'd have a small amount and it never set my sugars up. I was on insulin though.

Why are you using low fat marg? You can have normal butter!

All I had in fridge!
apple and cheese sounds interesting. Thanks. Really want a bit slab of cake though.

I make banana cake but add cooking apples and honey.

Actually, what about bananas on toast with honey?

PaigeTurner · 08/10/2010 14:26

Thorntons diabetic chocolate.

bundlebelly · 08/10/2010 14:43

Really? paigeturner Sounds too good to be true! How much of it can you each before levels are too high?

I'm not sure as I don't have experience of GD - but my friend has type 2 diabetes and I always have to take him a selection of their diabetic chocs when I visit. They just have sweetners in AFAIK.

Tastes pretty good too, I always pinch some Grin

bundlebelly · 08/10/2010 14:48

I'm getting some. Thanks!

I was advised not to have diabetic chocolate. Something about a laxative effect.

But, Sainsbury's also do a bar of chocolate with no added sugar which tastes like Belgian chocolate. I used to eat a few squares of it, and it used to hit the spot.

trixie123 · 08/10/2010 18:43

how long have you had the GD? You might find that you can have some normal choc and cake and it won't be too bad. For me it was white carb like pizza that sent my levels up. Times of day can vary it too. Don't forget exercise can allow you to have more sugar as well.It takes a while to figure out what works for you.

sugar free jelly with a spoon full of diabetic icecream is my sweet fix at the mo, feels naughty but isn't

right I'm off to Sainsburys to hunt down this sugar free chocolate!

plantsitter · 09/10/2010 09:59

Bake a banana in tinfoil with a smidge of orange juice and a teeny amount of honey if you think you can get away with it. Yummy.

plantsitter · 09/10/2010 10:03

Meant to also say - there is some evidence that cinnamon lowers blood sugar although I have never quite believed this. It is tasty though, especially on bananas, yoghurt and other not quite sweet stuff!

Smash09 · 09/10/2010 11:11

How about a nice creamy greek yoghurt with some splenda or a dab of honey and some walnuts?

Or baked apple with greek yoghurt

For cakey stuff would you fancy banana oat cake?

Thanks everyone! xx

The are a few low GI recipes out there using bananas and honey or fruit sugar. I think they're better than anything with sweetners in.

When I test my bloods and they're quite low I treat myself to a teaspoonful of nutella - which is fairly low GI because of the nut content. Straight off the spoon yum!

Have you tried Agare Nectar? It's a low GI cactus juice that's like syrup - I have it on porridge or in Greek yogurt and it doesn't effect my blood sugar levels. They sell it in Tesco in the Free from aisle.

As someone else said - USE BUTTER!!!! it really helps with the taste of baked stuff and if you can't have sugar and limited carbs I'm all for buttering it up.

bundlebelly · 11/10/2010 11:22

Thanks slimyak. Great ideas. I've got such a sweet tooth, really struggling, and haven't even been diagnosed yet! I had GD last pregnancy, and am preg again, but they won't test me till 28 weeks, just advised me to do the low gi diet until then in the hope it would keep it at bay. But it is a really hard when I haven't been told anymore than that. But feel so guilty if I eat anything high gi.

Dark chocolate isn't too bad if you can control yourself enough to have a few squares at a time. GD doesn't tend to kick in until at least 24 weeks so I would say don't deprive yourself until you have to. I saw the diabetic consultant and she said that what I did before it kicked in would not make much difference. However, weight gain is a problem so as long as you don't go mad and also try to keep active, so slice of cake and go for a walk!!!!

MumtoF · 11/10/2010 19:43

Oh, and although flapjacks can be high in sugar the oats help with the GI, particularly if they have lots of nuts in them. Homemade are obviously best as you can control sugar/syrup.
