other reasons not to have a drink...

I've had a look through older threads and can't find anything, so although I'm sure this will have been done before, I'm after some advice please.
I've only just tested positive (last week), so won't be drinking again for a while... but I don't want my pregancy to be common knowledge till I'm around 13 weeks.
So far so good except we're visiting the in-laws at half term, by which time I'll be around 6 weeks. They like a drink, and not joining in will raise some eyebrows unless I have a cast-iron "reason" why... so, what did you all say before you went public?

Antibiotics (although I think that's probably the bigest tip off going)
Or you and your DH pretend to be on a super healthy new diet where neither of you drink

I used... I've got cystitis and I'm on really strong antibiotics. No one questions the first one, especially if there are men around!

potplant · 07/10/2010 15:38

Good idea Shelbee give a condition that no-one would question you about!

readyornot2011 · 07/10/2010 15:38

I found it was much less suspect, if you accept the drink and just don't drink it. Either subtly swap with DH or tip it when no ones looking. My DH thought this was great fun

I just said that I had had a really boozy few weeks or so and was therefore taking a month off the sauce.

Tried the antibiotics one too but suspect people see through that . . .

I second ready. I tested positive two days before my own birthday party, wandered around all night with a glass of (what looked like) rose, but was in fact non-alcoholic fruit punch. Easier than having to field questions.

For the first night, say your hangover from the night before and couldn't face anything stronger than tea or juice....!

Going forward, make the drinks up yourself (if at home) and put soda water etc with lemon in a glass to make it look like Vodka or G&T.

Always be the driver.

Ha, I managed the same thing where you pretend to be drinking - fooled my whole family with the help of my husband and sister. Both of them wound up quite drunk due to having to down my drinks too...it's tricky when people come around with bottles to top you up - much easier if you can move around and mingle. Also, in my dad's house, I volunteered to fetch the drinks and put apple juice and water in a wine glass and no one realised it wasn't white wine. Can you do that at your in-laws?

bonnymiffy · 08/10/2010 08:36

Thanks for your suggestions ladies, I think I may need to fake some symptoms and go with the "antibiotics". I can see that I will end up doing quite a bit of driving, but DH is more likely to be the problem as he is really excited and incapable of keeping a secret!
