Haapy stories re: exposure to hand, foot & mouth?

My DS has just come down with hand, foot & mouth (for the second time) and I'm 4 weeks pregnant.

Does anyone have any happy stories about exposure to hand, foot & mouth during early pregnancy?

I can't stop thinking about miscarriage, particularly as two friends have miscarried very recently. Hoping a couple of "my child had it when I was pregnant and the baby was fine" stories, might take my mind off it.

Erm my DS had it 3 weeks ago. I'm 11wks and scan says all is fine so far.

I called my GP for advice... went down and collected load of leaflets she'd got for me... I think it's very rare to have complications from what they say.

Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted to hear!

DS had it at the beginning of the year, so I'm sure I will have built up immunity, if not in childhood, but it's difficult not to worry (if you're as neurotic as me!).

My nephew had it all the time and he certainly had it when sil was pregnant with dc2 and no ill effects. Good luck

Oh, I had no idea I should be avoiding exposure to hand, foot and mouth. Obviously I should be avoiding as many infections as possible but I work as a nurse in a children's hospital so that's not possible. So, I have been in contact with a child with hand, foot and mouth. What should I be worried about? I guess it makes miscarriage more likely, but is there anything else?

My DD had it 6 months ago. All I can say is that the GP said there was no need to exclude her from nursery or keep her away from pregnant women (I asked because a friend of mine was pregnant at the time.) Basically I was told to carry on as normal as it doesn't seem to be considered a risk. Also-apart from being spotty she really didn't seem to suffer at all. Hope that helps to put your mind at rest.

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and HAVE hand, foot and mouth!!! Had it all week, caught it from my ds1 (15 months) and just started feeling baby move this week. My friend who is a doctor said no need to worry, and certainly nothing untoward has happened, touchwood. It's just bloody annoying and the blisters are quite painful, esp in my mouth! Bloody kids.

I've also got a feeling that it's something you only get once - do you know if you had it as a kid?

Lozario · 07/10/2010 21:28

I've just found out that you can get it more than once, but only different strains - ie not the same exact virus twice. All the bupa, nhs sites I've checked say not to worry at all - v difficult to get in the first place as an adult and if you do get it (like me!!)there's v little to worry about. Just be v careful about washing hands after nappy changes, as it can apparently live in their poo for up to 4 weeks.

Main message is, don't worry.

My DS and DH both had it when I was about 4 weeks pregnant, DS was ok but DH was really ill for about a week and I didn't catch it. I was also told by the nurse my DH saw that it was nothing to worry about even if I did get it and everything I read online said the same. I'm 17 weeks now and everything seems fine, 12 week scan was fine too. I'm sure you'll be fine

You are all too kind! Thank you. I feel thoroughly reassured. DS' pox are drying up all ready, so hopefully we're moving out of the infectious period, anyway.

I love mumsnet Smile
