how long do you stay in hospital after an elective c-section?

I have been booked in for a c-section at 39 weeks due to placenta previa and wondered how long people on here, who have had ECS, were in hospital for afterwards?

Any other advice/tips you have for before/during/after a c-section would also be gratefully received....

Thank you!

I've had three sections. The first was an EMCS which I had on Tuesday and out Thursday. I struggled at home though, so maybe one more day would have been better. My first ELCS I was had on Monday and was out Thursday. I think that was about the right amount of time.

With DS3 I stayed in until I had the stitch removed, so 6 days, but that was purey because DS2 has autism and back then tended to jump all over me. I was climbing the walls though after 4 days.

Take arnica before and after as this helps with the scar healing. Accept as much help as possible, even if you're not inclined to like help from other people. And don;t be afraid to ask for more pain relief. Days 3/4 I found were the worse.

Had mine on Wed out on Friday

There was a really useful thread, see if I can find it

maybe of use

Footwear that you don't have to bed down to put on

Windese tablets and peppermint capsules for trapped wind

Drinks with straws

Big pants and use maternity pads to protect the wound

Shower wash/gel with the handle to hang on shower rail so don't have to bend down to pick it up

Nightdress/shirt for first night as will have catheter in - legs won't be on show as will be wearing knee-high surgical compression stockings

I'm going in tomorrow and will be out Sun.Am hoping for Saturday as long as everything is ok. Last two I had 5 days but its now three.

I'm almost 36 weeks and will be in for a section if baby doesn't turn. My midwife reckoned it would be 2 nights.

DinahRod- liked shower gel tip- hadn't thought of that.

I'm wondering if charcoal would help with trapped wind too. My sister had a C-section and as far as I recall, the wind pains were worse than the scar.

i cant believe it so quick now.I will be having 4th section in Jan and have always stayed in best part of a week. I am scared now as cant imagine being home so early. How did you all find it?
I know its naughty but my tip would be-whispers-take your own pain killers. They only gave paracetamol in hospital and i needed more eg.ibruprofen or some codeine.
I would also say get up and about asap.
Still worried about the short stay now, eeven more reason to get those visitors rules in place Wink

I've had three sections first emergency stayed in for 3 days, second elective 2 days, third elective one night. Much happier at home but make sure plenty of pain relief prescribed before leaving hospital. Keeping on top of pain critical.

Would also recommend requesting a combined spinal epidural. If you only have a spinal and it runs out your only option is a general anaesthetic. With cbined you can top up with epidural. I had to be topped up every time. Good luck!

Mine were emergencies, but I was in for 3 nights and 4 nights respectively (my BP plays up from about day 2, so that causes concern). My mate had an elcs and came home after 24 hours. I probably couldn't have done that as both times I was in a lot of pain the day after the op, but then I suspect electives where they can take their time getting in are less damaging than emcs.

Some hospitals are taking the (stupid) view that paracetomol and ibuprofen are enough after CS. It is total bolleaux IME and so if you can talk to the doctor before your op and get them to write you a prescription for something decent. Chances are after the op you won't see a doctor again for a day and you don't want to be in pain. I think that if you stay on top of your pain - take meds before you start hurting for the first few days - that can only help.

ShowOfHands · 07/10/2010 21:28

I was out after 12hrs (em cs).

I needed neither paracetamol nor ibuprofen. But that just shows that everybody's different. Do not be afraid to ask if you need it. I was offered morphine and codeine when in hospital.

smokinaces · 07/10/2010 21:29

DS1 was born Friday evening, came out Tuesday lunch.

DS2 was Tuesday evening, came out Friday morning

Both times I was pushed by the hosptial to leave any time from 24hours. I had to argue for my 3/4 night stays.

smokinaces · 07/10/2010 21:33

After DS1 I had a morphine injection - and regretted it. I was out for 12 hours like I was drunk.

With DS2 I refused it and had just codeine and paracetemol.

paisleyleaf · 07/10/2010 21:34

2 days.
I drank loads of water after so that the catheter was flowing well and they were happy to remove it and then I moved around as much as I could.
They gave me really good painkillers and I took them regularly.
