Duvets

The purple NHS book says no duvets in the cot. However while it obviously means no adult duvets, what about those little thinner ones you see in Babies R us and Mothercare?

Nope, they're for over 1 or 2 years old only.

Mammie81 · 05/10/2010 22:11

It says no quilts either, so just lots of sheets then? Dont they get cold?

You should use cellular blankets, which are breathable. It's usually 1 flat sheet on top and then 1-3 cellular blankets depending on room temp.

We used cellular blankets, or you can use a light fleecy one as well.

When DS was little, we used to have him in a short-sleeved vest, a sleepsuit and then a cellular blanket doubled over him.

Mammie81 · 05/10/2010 22:16

Ah! I actually have some of those already (didnt know they were called that)

Thanks all.

My mum is adament duvets are ok. Although she had it pounded into her that babies are put to sleep on their side so she thinks everything in that purple book is rubbish!

The thing is, when we were all born houses were much colder, so more bedding was needed.

Also, there has been a huge amount of research done on SIDS (cot death) in the last 20 years and one of the big factors is overheating.
I'm not saying that to panic you, just giving you a little ammo for the discussions with your Mum Wink

Absolutely - overheating is one of the biggest risk factors for babies - if they're cold they wake up and let you know! The cellular blankets or sleeping bags are best. Duvets are NOT ok.

Though I disagree with Alibaba - our house is freezing even now (currently down to 8 degrees in DD's room at night)!
