Probably posting in the wrong section, but after birth of DD1 7 days ago am too sleep-deprived to work out right place Grin. Has anyone used one of these baby hand/foot imprint services? We were looking at John Lewis, but they look pretty pricey and was wondering if anyone can recommend a cheaper company. We are in North London.
Time for the next feed.......

I got a diy kit and did my own :)

My friend used a dental cast. About £3 in Asda and his came out fantastically. He just sprayed them gold afterwards, and framed. All in all about a fiver.

I bought one for my friend when her DS was born. I bought it from Kiddicare

We got a DIY one from Mothercare, it was brilliant (until the cats brought in a mouse the other day, who nibbled her toe away).

i got one from mothercare, just couldn't get it to work...

i did mine in a pottery shop in the end- if you find a pottery cafe they should be able to offer this service. i'm in north london sometimes and i know there's a pottery cafe on alexandra park road which does them, but they're pricey too (don't know how it compares to john lewis though).

i like the dental cast idea- wish i'd thought of that!!

thanks everyone - like the idea of the dental cast, and i think i know the pottery cafe muslimah
loopyloops - sorry the toe got nibbled.... aren't cats supposed to kill the mice rather than bringing them home as extra pets????

Ugh the stupid cats do it all the time. Either live animals (a bat once!) or bits of them. Usually there is a mouse face and kidney waiting for me on the stairs in the morning. Ewww.

Dental cast sounds like a great plan.

Baby Casting

MrsBloomingTroll · 08/03/2011 10:59

We were given the John Lewis Imprints one as a new baby present. The lady who did ours was very patient with DD who, at 16 weeks, was screaming (the clay is cold). The disadvantage of using John Lewis is you have to be there at a set time on a set day (IME) which is easier said than done with a small baby...

Lots of our friends have done them at pottery cafes and they all looked great. I'd probably go to a pottery cafe next time.

For anyone in the Birmingham area there is a local artist who does 3D casts of body parts including baby bumps and baby hands and feet, the detail is amazing have a look at the photos!

I'm going to do my own with DS when I get round to buying the stuff...I'm going to use air-drying clay that doesn't need firing, and acrylic paint. Might then varnish it if it needs it. You can buy box frames in Ikea, and I'm going to use No-Nails or similar to stick it in. I reckon the whole set-up will cost me about £20 - isn't the John Lewis one something ridiculous like over £100 if you want a silver frame?

Zipitydoda · 08/03/2011 14:36

I used a kit called magic custard. Bought it for DS1 and it has bEen enough for 2 DS. 2 sets of baby feet (4 feet) and 2 hands. Came with gold and silver coloured paints and they still look good 6 years on. If you have a kit like this I recommend doing it with a helper while baby is sleeping ideally in a buggy so you can get their feet at a good angle!

If you can make it to St Albans Pots of Art do it for £35 and £15 extra for a frame. They are lovely there and have lots of 10% off vouchers which makes a big difference.

I got a cast done 6years ago by a wonderful lady called CJ. Take a look at her stuff here: Rockabelly

its my most prized possession and worth every penny.
