Hi,

My last midwife appointment, 38 week, I had to see the dr instead as the midwife was too busy to see me,(this has happened throughout the pregnancy!)

She checked my blood pressure and just said that's fine, anyway I've just looked at my notes and it says 137/90 according to the devil that is google this is really high. Should I be concerned?

Thanks

what was it before?

NoTeaForMe · 05/10/2010 19:10

At 36 weeks it was 140/80,
at 35 weeks it was 130/75.

So I guess it hasn't suddenly shot up or anything?!

90 on the botom sounds high, anyone else on here have any idea?

mamasunshine · 05/10/2010 20:41

Do you have any way of checking your blood pressure at home? When is your next mw appointment? Just asking as they wouldn't want it going any higher than that, so would be good to keep an eye on it. Give your mw a ring if you're concerned, and let her know if any symptoms such as severe headaches/swelling/blurred vision etc etc. From what I understood they don't like to see your diastolic reading (lower no) go up over 10 points?

mamasunshine · 05/10/2010 20:42

I also think it sounds high, they would usually compare with your booking in blood pressure. Can you see that in your notes?

ICantGetMuchSleep · 05/10/2010 21:00

My is up at those levels at the moment (36 weeks), started out in booking appointment at 110/70 ish. Have they checked your urine for protein? My MW was not overly concerned but wants to keep an eye on BP and is seeing me every week - sounds like you need a similar kind of monitoring. Ring your hospital if you are worried to put ypur mind at ease.

Google is a monster though, isn't it?! Smile

ICantGetMuchSleep · 05/10/2010 21:01

That should say "My BP is up at those levels" Blush

When mine that high with DD1 I was sent to hospital unit to be monitored for a few hours. I was told anything 20 over your booking number on the bottom number was to be checked out.

After a couple of hours it had gone down enough to be let home. Did stay in for a while a few occasions after that as midwife and doctor said it was a precaution so near the end.

Bought a BP monitor for 2nd DD and readings at home were significantly lower than at doctors. Midwife and doc fine with those as long as no other symptoms.

Your hospital will have (?) such a unit and it may be worth ringing and getting checked out.

excitedmummy2be · 05/10/2010 21:20

I've just been checked over as my bp has increased since my booking in. I went to hospital and they said they would only be worried if the bottom figure was 90 or over. I don't mean to worry you but this is what I was told a couple of days ago at the hospital. I'd contact the mw or dr again just to check they are happy taking into account your wee check and everything else. Good luck

Hmm, now I have no idea what to think. The doctor truly thought nothing of it and didn't even tell me what it was, just said 'yep that's all fine'. My next appointment a week today, is that too long to leave it?

My booking in appointment bp was 136/77 for those that asked.

Thanks for all your advice so far.

Although your booking was 77, I agree with excited that anything 90 and over seemed to be something they wanted to check out.

I would personally contact the midwife and explain your worries as when I saw the docs they were generally less worried than the midwives regarding high BP.

If you have the same midwife usually then she/he will know you and your obstetric history and give advice that will reassure you either way.

I feel for you, high BP is such a worry ( I has 160/110 at one point, seeing stars but sent home fine the next day, just a blip and a migraine)

Hope you find the reassurance you need tomorrow

TheUnmentioned · 05/10/2010 23:41

I had an average BP of 120/70 in pregnancy and at 41 weeks it went up to 140/90 and I was kept in. I think Id call the midwife to be on the safe side.

NoTeaForMe · 05/10/2010 23:50

The problem with that is that although I have been assigned the one midwife I have only seen her twice throughout the whole pregnancy, I have either seen another midwife due to mine being on holiday or just being covered or a doctor. I have tried calling/texting her twice and she has never replied. And that doesn't include trying to get hold of her in the first place to make the booking in appointment, in the end I had to phone the hospital and point out my scan had been booked by my doctor and I still needed a booking in appointment with a midwife, they managed to sort it out at the last minute.

So I will try ringing her tomorrow but what do I do if I can't get hold of her?

Also, can this be down to stress? Only asking because I was 37+5 when bp was last checked and I moved house at 38. Wondered if this could be a factor? I'm now 38+5.

Thanks

OK. If you can't get hold of your midwife then phone the hospital. No one will think badly of you for wanting reassurance.

My hospital had a day care assessment unit that I could be put straight through to. The midwives were used to dealing with worried mums to be and I spent a lot of time in there over the last 5 weeks. Even if they talk to you and tell you to go back to your doctor then you can phone doctor and say the hospital have recommended you come in.

This is more than likely to turn out to be nothing but worrying will make your BP higher.

Stress could be a factor as when had BP checked during working day was rocket high, when on a day of was marginally rocket high!!

AlpinePony · 06/10/2010 06:18

Your booking BP was high (ime) so I think this is why the doctor was not worried.

Mine went from 110/60 for all the pregnancy to 185/125 at 36 weeks. That's alarm bell inducing! Wink
