grobags and moses baskets

I got conflicting advice from two different sales ladies in John Lewis today - one said that you can use a grobag in a moses basket, just with a bit of the end folded over. The other said that you had to use a blanket instead. I want to use grobags in the moses basket for DC 1 due this week - is this ok? can I just have a couple of inches folded over at the bottom (obviously not doubled up over the baby though to prevent overheating). Did anyone else do this?

You can get newborn grobags from vertbaudet that are suitable from 7lb IIRC. They fit very nicely into a moses basket!

Your baby may prefer to be swaddled for a while though in which case you will only be using sheets/blankets for a few weeks.

(My DS was in a grobag from 10 days in a crib, but he was 9lb born and a horrendous fidget!)

I used Grobags from birth with both my DC, both were over 7lb at birth.

As long as your Grobag is suitable from birth you will be ok.

Congratulations btw.

Thanks for vertbaudet tip but have already bought grobags. My baby looks likely to be huge so should be able to go in a grobag from birth. Did you need to tuck the grobag under to fit it in?

I used a merino wool/cotton growbag style sleep bag for DD from birth to 18 months or so.

I didn't use a moses basket but a hammock. Don't see why you couldn't use a sleep bag in moses basket?

Hi findingmymojo - feel a little like i'm hijacking this thread but seeing as my questions is partly related...

You're the only person I've been able to find who's used a hammock. I'm really, really keen to use one but am nervous as there's so little info out there on them. Which did you use? Did you find them as safe as a cot/moses basket?

And I'd like to use a growbag in mine too - that safe with a newborn?

I used a gro bag in a moses basket for DD from about 4 weeks......hth

I think the 'from birth' grobags say they are suitable from 8.8lb (or thereabouts, check the label) so that their head doesn't fit back down the head hole if they wriggle about!

I will be using my grobags in a crib once the baby looks big enough not to wriggle down in it! I was intending to use them folded over slightly in a Moses basket but was lent a crib! Sure that it will be fine! Hope that helps!

So long as the grobag is a good fit around the neck and chest and the baby can't cover their face with it then I'd have thought it'd be fine. Mine had grobag from 2 weeks old. I swaddled them at first but they got cold as the blankets would loosen so went straight into a grobag. I think they're brill.

Been using a growbag in moses basket with our tiny DD since she was about 6wks old, (now 14wks and still only 10lb!) Provided they fit properly and are the right tog, I think they're safer than blankets.

TK Max has some very small ones for 7.99 and I've seen some in both Asda and Tesco for ten pounds.

SpeedyGonzalez · 05/10/2010 00:57

DD is in grobag and in Moses basket right now. As long as it fits I don't see the problem. I use it for practicality's sake as she now kicks the blankets off.

gastrognome · 05/10/2010 09:07

Yes as others have said, no reason not to use a (well fitting) grobag in a Moses basket. My DD was in one from about 2 weeks old (she was born during a heatwave so didn't need any covering before that). I think I just folded the end under, though she was such a wriggly baby it didn't make much difference!
