Heavy lifting while pregnant

Haven't had any luck with the Archives, can anyone help...

Is the problem with lifting during pregnancy damage to you (knackering your back) or to the baby? And if the latter, when does it become dangerous? The thing I will be lifting (not pg yet, but starting to plan) is a folding bicycle, about 12kg and awkward i.e. weight can't be distributed evenly, one-sided. Short distances only. Anyone know?

I think it is damage to your back, as the ligaments soften during pregnancy making you more prone to painful injury. I should imagine that the strain is also not fantastically good for the baby, but I think the primary risk is to yourself.

The damage is to the abdominal muscles that are distended (or opened in bettween) durign pregnancy. I got an injury there by carrying a 2 yr old a couple of blocks when I was 5m pregnant.

IMO Carrying a brompton may cause a bit of a problem in the later half of pregnancy.

I did something unpleasant to my lower abdomen trying to lift something I really shouldn't whilst pregnant. I don't think it's caused any real problems, but it has continued to bother me for the rest of the pregnancy and has probably exacerbated other pelvic problems. Don't know whether it was a strained muscle or what. (Totally my own fault though - was trying to hide an illicit Ebay purchase before my husband got home...)

Nooooo - that would have taken up far less space.

When I did the 'hospital tour' the only bit I liked (which was in the birth centre I wouldn't be allowed in anyway) was a water feature in their 'sensory room'. I thought the soft sound of running water would be quite nice for my home birth (as if refilling the birth pool wouldn't do it... ) so I had a rush of blood to the head and bought one straight away. Unfortunately, it was a little larger than the one in the birth centre - but it was very good value and the postage was extremely reasonable. Vietnamese slate. With pump. And pebbles.

Unfortunately, my husband has a bit of a thing about what a hoarder I am and how much clutter I introduce to the house - so I thought I'd hide it and then pretend later I'd had it for ages.

He found it when he was clearing out the second bedroom for baby stuff and saw through my ruse immediately. However, he was less concerned about the clutter or the cost than the fact that I'd seen fit to carry what is essentially a stone fountain upstairs when seven months pregnant...
