fetal movement - 30 weeks

I am 30 weeks on Sunday and have an anterior placenta. I feel the baby move a fair bit - mostly in morning and evening, and if I wake and lie on side in night.

But I haven't been 'monitoring' movement level. At my 28 week my midwife said that they stopped doing the '10 x movements etc) as some babies are less active than others. She said the baby should develop a pattern.

But are there some days which are quieter than others? I've never had no movements, but I wonder if today if baby is quieter than yesterday. Hard to recall but the idea of it makes me paranoid and I don't know what or when i should be concerned?

I have been sitting in a car for 9 hours today which isn't usual activity!

Have you felt movement today? Personally I noticed that bump was much more active in the evening and at night and used to worry some days.

Some days will be quieter than others, there's less room to move :)

Yes definitely felt movement today. Normal level this morning. But sitting in a car all afternoon I was conscious that the movement was very slight this afternoon. God, it could drive you nuts!

Yes I definitely have quieter days. Also I think if im busier I tend not to notice movements as much so sometimes have to have a sit on the sofa to get the baby going. If you were sat in a car perhaps you were in a position where you couldn't feel them very much.

Personally as long as I feel something I don't worry, but I know other people do do the counts and take it a bit more seriously.

Just make sure you get checked out if the movements really drop off (rather than just having a quiet morning or something)
If they do, try something sweet or a cold drink/ice cream and that usually gets them moving. Failing that they normally start booting you in the ribs as soon as you get comfortable in bed :)

Good luck x

I am 30 weeks and rather than getting lots of kicks I am gettin more turns and moving limbs. May be the position the baby is in but I am not overy worried. I feel the baby at the same times of day generally but find that when I am in work I notice the movements less :)

seasister · 01/10/2010 20:57

Thanks all. I'm sure it's fine, but I'll keep an eye. As I said, it could drive you nuts. You move through the trimesters with one "perceived" problem replacing another...

I cant believe your midwife would be so stupid! you should always feel at least 10 movements a day lack of movement can mean a problem and you should speak to your labour ward for monitoring!

I was advised to be concious of my babies normal patterns of movement rather than look for 10 kicks per day as well - I thought this was the most recent advice?

Certainly my DD generally moved 10 times before I was even out of bed in the morning.

My MW did say that if I was worried about movement to have a cold sweet drink at a time when the baby was normally active and lie down quietly with my hands on my tummy and count the movements and to ring her if I didn't feel 10 in an hour.

I had this recently. As I have an anterior placenta I don't always feel regular movement.

Told my midwife recently that there were a couple of days when I didn't feel much and she told me off for not contacting her. Felt like saying "well you never TOLD me that I should be feeling a certain amount of movement".

I was a bit worried as I had been stressed out and thought that was why the baby wasn't moving. I have since felt her regularly again though. I think with an anterior placenta it has to be what is normal for you as we feel everything less. As long as you are still feeling her every day a few times, you should be fine.

daisystone · 03/10/2010 12:23

Also, mw said that if you haven't felt her for a while, have a cold drink or something sweet and sit with your feet up for a while and concentrate on feeling her.

I'm 31 weeks tomorrow and also have an anterior placenta (I've also been told strong stomach muscles can make it harder to feel movements - don't know if mine are particularly strong though). The baby also seems to be more active some days than others - some days quite active but on some days in only really moving when I go to bed (either at lunchtime for a quick rest or at night). If I'm doing something active I don't feel movements at all.

I was also told by my midwife that they have stopped advising women to count a certain number of movements per day but rather to get used to what seems to be your baby's pattern and contact the hospital if this changes. If you were told to count 10 movements between 9am and 5pm or 9pm or whatever the guidance was, some women might not be up until lunchtime and in my case I tend to only get lots of movements after I go to bed, usually between 9.30 and 10.30pm. My midwife said this sounded normal but I will talk to her again this week - there always seems to be something to worry about!
