Scan Questions

Hi, I had my first scan yesterday at 10 weeks and it was great to see the baby's heartbeat and to see it's little arms waving about. The only thing is that I feel like I now just have lots of different questions and worries.

One of my main concerns is the position of the baby it was right down at the bottom and quite far to the left, nearly all of the other scans I've seen have shown the baby to be in the middle.

I'm also quite concerned about the size of my bladder, seriously it was huge, I've never even noticed someone's bladder on a scan picture before and this is pretty much all you can see, and instead of being underneath my uterus as it is in the pregnancy book pictures it was basically squashing both the baby and the top of my uterus into a really weird shape. The doctor kept talking about how it was too full, but I thought you were meant to go with a full bladder.

I'm also confused about when to tell people, I had it in my head that it would go get to 12 weeks, have a scan, announce, not really sure if we should still wait till 12 weeks or just share the good news.

Anyway sorry for rambling on a bit, I will speak to the midwife about these when I see her in a few weeks but just wondering if anyone had any insight into why I appear not to be normal!

Dont worry about where the baby/uterus is at this point, it will be in a different position depending on how full your bladder is/how you are lying etc etc, plus, where the sonographer had the probe isnt nec where the baby is iyswim. And obvously as baby grows your uterus will change position, everyones lies slightly differently when not full with baby if that makes any sense?!

Also don't worry about the size of your bladder, remember the image may have been magnified. Also as you are 10 rather than 12 weeks the size of the baby/uterus will be smaller in comparison than normal. But its prob just that you manage to hold onto more than most. You are right, you are meant to go with a full bladder and if they thought it was too full they should have got you to empty some (but this is easier said than done!!). They must have been happy that they could see everything, it was probably really clear, just harder to press on.

You don't sound like you are not normal at all...

And congrats Grin

Thanks loopymumsy and xMrsSx that does put my mind at rest somewhat.

I think it just wasn't quite the experience I expected it to be, also didn't realise that it is currently half the size it will get to be 12 weeks which I guess makes quite a difference.

Now what can I worry about next ......

I recently had my 12 week scan. I drank a bottle of water beforehand. When I walked in, the sonographer said "how are you?" and I said "eerrrrm, excited but desperate for a pee!"

She chuckled and said 'oh, some people need to drink loads of water before the scan, others don't - it depends on how hydrated you are etc'

She then started the scan and said "blimey, you must really need to pee - your bladder is full to the brim!" and let me go and empty two-thirds of my bladder before resuming the scan.

So.... I reckon don't worry about it. It might just mean that you're well hydrated, so didn't need to drink as much water as other people. The sonographer should have just let you do a pee.

Just relax - it sounds like you have a healthy baby :)
