Need to re-do anomoly scan due to +BMI

I had my 20 week anomoly scan today and the sonographer said he could not see the heart properly and could I come back to redo the scan in a couple of weeks.

As it happens I am going on holiday tomo and won't be back in time so said no... I asked if I should organise private scan whilst I am away he said yes if I can becuase basically if there is a problem I can only terminate up until 23 weels Hmm His words not mine.

He didn't say why he couldn't see the heart properly and I assumed it was because I am only 19+6 today and it wasn't yet developed enough but I also left feeling a bit anxious that he saw something he was not sure about and wanted to look again in a week or so...

When I read my notes later at home he had put in a report clearly stating that he could not see the heart in enough detail due to my raised BMI. That's fine - I am aware I am overweight but why did he not explain this to me? It would have put my mind at rest...

Has anyone else had this...?

I think you're being very generous to assume that his stating "you cannot terminate after 23 weeks" did in fact refer to a potassium chloride injection. Which incidentally not all hospitals do give - it depends very much on circumstances. I'm nit sure why you think the subject is not appropriate to be discussed here.

Th OP has every right to understand that not only was the sonographer who scanned her deeply insensitive but also medically incorrect on a fairly important issue.

OP I hope you have mannaged to arrange a scan in the next few weeks to ease your worries - I understand how difficult it is having to just sit and wait and I do hope you get some positive answers in the coming weeks Smile

best wishes

Nancydrew I only didnt think it was appropriate to discuss here in view of the OP and her situation, and I know exactly how anxious and worried she will be as I was in exactly the same boat.

And all along I have said I am NOT justifying how insensitive the sonographer was or the experience the OP had. It was NOT right. And and no point did I say the OP didnt have a right to feel the sonographer was insensitive!!!

I was only trying to add some more information to the thread. And I have no idea whether the inj was what he was referring to, although it is a big coincidence if not, any sonographer would know you can of course terminate at any stage so I find it very unlikey he would not have known this. And we would have similar issues in wanting to book ladies in for rescans quickly because of the 21/6 cut off for this. But I am not justifying how he handled this at all.

I am overweight, size 18 and I had a scan at 9 weeks due to bleeding which I thought was going to have to be internal -but the sonographer did it externally. The two scans I've had since were also external, including the nuchal fold.

I was the same size during my first pregnancy and also had only external scans.

So maybe it is a cop out? Or depends on how good the sonographer is?

I had the same treatment yesterday, I was very upset. She was so rude to us when we first walked in the door she rudely said "Don't talk to me during the scan" she then rushed around and took 5 mins before saying firstly that I was booked in too early as I was 19wks4days, and needed to be 20. She then said the baby was too low on my pelvis, so she didn't check the spine, face, or heart. She then put on my form it was due to my BMI. She didn't show us the scan picture, and we paid for it (as it was supposed to be a special day) and just got a pic of most of its head and some of its stomach. We were so shocked at the time, after having no problems, and a wonderful 12 week scan - despite me being severely dehydrated at the time due to Hyperemesis Gravidarum. My BMI is 28, so it is quite high yes, but in my maternity records my midwife (who has been equally terrible) knocked my height down by 2 1/2 inches and put a couple more ibs on me making my BMI 34. When actually I am 5ft9 and 90kgs now. This I know as I had my BMI taken just a few months before my pregnancy, at the same doctors, and at 20 weeks pregnant I have only gained 4ibs.

We have our next scan on 10th Oct :( I really want to know if my little bubba is ok, especially after such a horrid pregnancy. Also, would love to know if it is a little boy or girl x
