My back aches badly - by afternoon I can't bear it though it is okay when I wake up in morning. Have seen osteopath which has helped a bit but is also v expensive. Would midwife be able to refer me to physio and would this help? It is ache in mid back (between bra strap and small of back) so not where most people seem to complain of it.

Hi YellowFlowers,

I feel your pain (literally). We have a strange system here with NHS physio. There is a class you need to attend at 16 weeks. If you don't go you don't get basically. I am suffering just now with back pain, possibly related to a UTI I have, but MW can't refer me until I've done the class, but I'm only 12 weeks Confused

I've managed to get round this because of the health care I get at work we can self refer for physio and the clinic is in my office.

The same rules may not apply to you, but there is no harm speaking to you MW to see what she can do. If she can't do anything your GP should be able to.

I've also been told that accupuncture works wonders, but you'd have to pay for that.

Good luck with everything and i hope you get the assistance you need :o

I had a slipped disc last year with v bad back ache (could barely walk at one point). It's still not healed so having issues with it now (mines is very lower back).

I mentioned to my mw I would find it useful to see a physio and she agreed and told me to ask GP for referral. I just rung up my GP and said mw had recommended refer and could she do it via me asking over the phone or would I have to go in, she said she would do it on the phone, so easy peesy! Went today to physio and she was fab - given me a back suport thing and lots of stretch ideas to do and will have follow up appointments as she said if the pain gets bad I can have tens/accupuncture for it, so it's worth asking and see how far you get.

just read lismca and I've been told where I am it's possible to get accupuncture on NHS, so I guess it depends entirely on where you are and your PCT rules etc. good luck

My MW referred me. And I did the early pregnancy physio class at about 10 weeks!

Oh and it really helped. Smile As does swimming.

i knew nothing about early pregnancy physio class.
rang midwife though and she has referred me to physio though she said appt will be three weeks.

Have been going swimming but doesn't seem to help. Also doing pregnancy water aerobics classes. At least each monrign I start again as it is better after a night's sleep.

I too had a slipped disc in my lower back before I was pregnant and have been suffering throughout. I've now got to 34 weeks and am also suffering from SPD and the MW has today finally referred me as I can't move around very well now. She is not sure whether the appointment will come before the baby that is the only downside but also recommended I see the doc and get them to refer me as well.

They weren't keen before today to refer me and kept telling me to wear a pelvic girdle thing which doesn't help me. Also, a Tens machine was mentioned but not until about 36 weeks.

Good luck.
