Getting conflicting advice and not got midwife appointment as yet, still not got the call as only 7 weeks.

Anyone had advice from doc about this ? Its my second pregnancy and the first was pretty problem free.

Cheers !

Of course you can.

I was told not to start exercise in pregnancy (i.e. not to put my body under strain, get too hot etc) but if you are already a jogger, don't stop. You may find that when your joints losen you need to slow down/stop, but that isn't for ages.

Meglet · 29/09/2010 21:32

I kept on doing gentle short (4/5 min) runs on the running machine during both pregnancies and stopped a week before they arrived.

I don't think it's wise to start running if you've never done it before though. I took my workouts down quite a lot when I was pg, sort of Granny level exercise.

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 29/09/2010 21:35

Pregnancy is not the time to take up jogging for the first time but it is fine to continue doing exercise that you are used to. Listen to your body, you are more prone to strains and sprains while you are pregnant.

ah thanks for the advice, I started at the beginning of the summer along with my usual yoga. I was going to take it very easy so I think I'll go and do a short jog tomorrow and see how I feel.

Feel like I need to run off the nausea :o

Thanks for replying

If you're used to it, it's fine, but be aware that your joints & pelvis won't be as stable so watch out for any aches & pains. And get a supportive bra!

You may well need a support vest for the bump as it grows too.

Absolutely fine. Paula Radcliffe ran right through her pregnancy. Although no marathons! Now, we're not all Paula Radcliffe, but if you're used to jogging it's fine to continue. Just don't push yourself too hard.

I did a 5k when I was 15 weeks pregnant, I did find it very hard as I couldn't run much in the first trimester. I've not run since as I got quite bad pains around my groin and got a bit worried. So I'm sticking to walking for now. But if you take it easy and listen to your body you should be fine.

So long as you're not spotting/bleeding or have any conditions that might cause problems (e.g. risk of preterm labour, incompetent cervix etc) it's completely and utterly fine.

As others have said, watch out closely for injuries, don't overdo it but carrying on as you were, maybe a bit less, is fine!

I'm having to give it up because I have spotting and incompetent cervix and my joints are already falling apart at 8 weeks in, but if it wasn't for that I'd still be out there :-)

I did the Great North Run a couple of weeks ago at 9 weeks pregnant. I just went a bit slower than I usually do. I did check with the doctor beforehand and he said that as long as there was no bleeding and I listened to what my body wanted me to do then it would be fine. I did end up walking a little bit but that was because I pulled my ITB rather than anything pregnancy related.

You should be fine just try not to push yourself in the same way you would pre-pregnancy.

I was told to stop running in early pregnancy by my doctor and my midwife but this was because I'd had a mc a few months earlier. I would suggest that if you or anyone reading this thread has concerns, bleeding, cramps or previous mc that it might be wise to lay off the running/jogging at least until things are settled. I hate not running and really miss the exercise but I've taken to cycling alongside DH, while he runs. It's not quite the same but I console myself by thinking that the pregnancy is more important than stressing about the pounds I am putting on! I hope that helps.

Second all the advice given here re not pushing/not starting if not a runner.

I did a 10k at 6 month pregnant and was fine ( 1 hr 5 mins with a wee stop included!) Fair bit slower than usual but felt great. Stopped running after that and power walked - inc on due date!

Honeybee79 · 30/09/2010 11:20

I was also told that if you jogged/ran before you got pregnant then it is fine to continue but not to take it up for the first time. I continued running about 5 miles 3 times a week until I was 22 weeks, by which point it felt uncomfortable and I just wanted to stop and take up swimming for the rest of the pregnancy. But if it still feels OK then fine to continue I think!

snowmummy · 30/09/2010 11:32

I was told by my GP at 5 weeks to stop running and take up a form of exercise that is lower impact. I have no idea why and I have heard that its ok to continue with exercise that you've already been doing but, I got that much conflicting advice that I decided to stop. As it happened I was so tired that I couldn't be bothered anyway. I started aerobics again at 18 weeks.

CardiCorgi · 30/09/2010 13:01

I kept running up until 26 weeks at which point the ligaments under my bump were feeling a bit uncomfortable. I'm still swimming and cycling (racing bike on the turbo trainer and mountain bike for outdoors) at 34 weeks.

My gynaecologist told me not to stop abruptly as that would be good for me, but to taper down slowly. I also cross-country skied until our snow melted and did my last race at 8 weeks which took my mind off the morning sickness quite nicely.

Bue · 30/09/2010 13:05

Yes, if you are a jogger already you can most definitely continue during a normal pregnancy. Paula Radcliffe was doing 5 and 10Ks during her pregnancies!

VivClicquot · 30/09/2010 14:26

I did a 10k on Sunday, at 8+4 weeks. I had a little walk for about a minute at 5k and then again at 6 and 7k, but other than that I was absolutely fine. Have had a scan since then too and everything is as it should be. :)

prettywhiteguitar · 30/09/2010 18:53

yey for all the sporty ladies :) I am definitely going to keep going with it now, thanks for all the encouragement.

Last time I was pregnant I worked as a gardener and stopped about 7mths, although this was mainly cause I couldn't bend over !

Well it gave all the old dears something to talk about

My gym instructor told me not to jog, especially during the first three months, so I just walk really fast on a steep incline on the treadmill. Like some of the other ladies, I find seimming excellent and the doctor also told me to do that. Better doing something rather than nothing and not being fit for the labour!

LabMonkey · 06/10/2010 08:24

My doc said I'd be fine to keep running although I've been too exhausted the last few weeks (I'm only 9 weeks). I managed to get through yesterday without being sick so aiming for a gentle 5k on Saturday if I feel ok. Still been for short runs to work (3.5k) on my days in London and actually found that running made me feel less sick than being on the train!
