Hi all, I saw midwife yesterday and she said she'd do my 34 wk bloods there and then and I was positive I didn't have them in my last pregnancy so she said u can decline if u like so I said I'd rather not have them if they aren't going to affect baby. She said it's to test my iron level which was very good earlier in pregnancy and I'm well so she doesn't see why it'd be a prob me not having them. I have a needle issue-I hate them and avoid unless it's a big deal I've had all the others and anti d as I'm o negative but if this is to test just for iron levels and i would be feeling bad jf there was a problem i can't see its a problem. I also dont want ghis particular mw taking bloods as i dont really trust her i am just wondering really if u think I should reconsider?

I was offered this and like you I hate needles! The only reason I had it was because I have a history of anemia. I wouldn't beat yourself up over this, if your levels are generally good and your not getting really exhausted its nothing to worry about.

My iron level was low on my last bloods, which explained why I was so chronically and unbelievably exhausted. If you feel fine, then your iron is probably fine. The other thing about iron is that babies don't suffer from low iron (according to my midwife). Basically, it is one of the things they will leech from you, so you suffer and they don't.

I wouldn't want to say not to have them because I don't know if they test for anything else, but from an iron point of view, I think you are probably okay.

Thank you for your replies, it has made me feel much better. I feel fine my only complaint is soreness and sleeplessness. The mw said it is just for iron levels so if that's the case and baby won't suffer from it then I'm glad I refused-I've not only got a needle phobia I also have tiny veins that noone ever seem to get first time except the hospital phlabotomist.

I really sympathise with the tiny veins issue! I always get jabbed twice to get one set of blood. The last time the midwife kindly suggested trying my hand...I was a bit unsure, since nobody has opted for this before although it has been mentioned as a last resort. Typically, it didn't work there, and it was really painful!

O noo I've had them try my hands also before it does hurt. I think pregnancy has got me over the worst of my fear but I'll still avoid if I can. X
