Is this pre eclampsia

Am on iPhone so apologies in advance for typos!
I have had bad oedema for months. Now pitting oedema up to knees. There was protein in urine at my gp checkup last week but bp was120/74 so gp just said to come back in a week. My sister is a doctor but not an obstetrician. She checked my bp tonight and it's now 150/82. She thinks they will suggest induction when I go back to gp tomorrow. Can anyone who has been induced for pre eclampsia tell me how high their bp got before induction suggested? Am 38 plus 6 tomorrow with a big baby according to growth scan. Do you think I meet criteria for pre eclampsia? How quickly will they want to induce me if I do? Many thanks in advance.

mine was 160/100 when i was hospitalised. I had to go in to hospital 6 weeks before i had DS1 and then they induced me at 35 weeks. They should have done a section as my blood pressure was a bit too high for a natural birth. It didnt come down for over 6 weeks after the birth and i had to stay in hospital for all that time. I put on 3 stone due to all the fluid but only had a 4lb baby.

Part of the placenta had detached and died due to the high blood pressure so DS1 stopped frowing at 34 weeks. I have to say ,i was a bit scared and i was so puffy all over ,but my face and hands used to look awful and they felt really tight. They ended up guiving me an epidural and topped it up for over 48 hours as the drug helps to keep you BP down and they kept me in a dark quiet room too. Apparently there are no drugs to lower blood pressure with pre eclampsia. It just has to take its course. My midwife said it happens more with the first born ,especially if it is a boy. Hope you dont feel too unwell Smile

mine was 160/104 when DD1 was born by ECS. I was told anything over 90 on bottom number is a real worry, but depends on your starting BP tbh.
DD1 was born weighing just 5lb at 37 weeks and had placental failure.

Mine was 140/110 when I was admitted. They induced me, but became distressed & they had to do a section.

Dd was 4lb 4, del'd at 36 weeks.

Mine went to 185/125 the day I was admitted Shock - was put immediately on magnesium and I stabilised around 140/110 but obviously still too high - was induced - ended up with emcs.

Thanks for the helpful info. Do you think they will induce me? Or is my bp not high enough?

Emma - I was exactly like you during my first pregnancy. Started with oedema. Then protein and then at about 36/37 weeks my BP shot up to 150/90. I was taken into hospital and made to do a 24 hour urine collection to determine how my kidneys were functioning. The result showed they were beginning to struggle so I was induced at 38+4. DD1 was huge (9lbs 4oz) so clearly me placenta was still feeding her!

I except they will admit you for 24 hour urine collection and then decide whether to induce you. They will also examine you to determine your Bishop's Score (readiness of cervix). If you have a low Bishop's Score and your urine collection results are OK they may leave you. Otherwise I would expect they will induce you. Which hospital are you going to?

If they do induce you my tip is to ask for pessaries and ARM but refuse the syntocin drip unless really necessary (ask the midwives what they think as the doctors always think its necessary).

Avocadoes · 29/09/2010 12:09

I would also refuse induction if you have a very low bishops score (google it for more info). Inductions are usually most successful when your body is preparing to go naturally. If you have a low bishops score and they really need to induce you then think carefully about asking for a c-section.

Thanks. Am going to ask for them to examine my cervix and also check if baby fully engaged. She wasn't fully engaged last week. Am dreading long and intervention filled induction if she isn't ready to come, but equally would rather not have section. Am hoping protein might have magically disappeared from urine this afternoon!

don't muck about with PE, especially if you are having visual distrubances ( they were like sparkles in front of the eyes for me), headaches or pain at the top of the ribs. They need to give you blood tests to check your organs are coping ok with the increased BP. Be pushy and insistant.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/09/2010 12:37

A decision on induction is normally made dependent on amount of protein in a 24hr urine collection and also blood values, mainly creatanine. Have you had blood taken?

EmmaKateWH · 29/09/2010 20:59

Just back from 5 hour trip to hospital where gp sent me. They took blood and it wad fine. Protein in
urine but only a bit. BP high when I
first got there but dropped a bit. CTG was fine. I have to go back on Friday to repeat the whole exercise. Many thanks for all your responses.

your blood pressure doesnt look too bad at the moment. Buit if you start to feel more puffy go straight to the docs

Tootiredforgodtyping · 30/09/2010 12:46

they seems to be keeping an eye on you. If you have any sympthons today call your midwife.
