Pilates and early pregnancy

Hi all,

I discovered today that I am pregnant, only 4 weeks. I do pilates on a friday and am now wondering whether to continue. I had a MMC in July so obviously don't want to do anything that could place extra strain on my body. Ideas?

best to check with your instructor. There are often exercises they suggest you not do in the early stages of pregnancy. And congratulations, I'm 4 weeks as well!

I did Pilates through all my 3 pregnancies (and have a pelvic floor that allowed me to go on a trampoline 4 weeks after DD3's birth ).

Agree with twinsister, tell your instructor as they will adapt/change exercises appropriately for you. Otherwise, AFAIK, it's a great way to exercise through pregnancy.

Congratulations!

Yes check with instructor. Mine said fine and would let me know anything that wasn't a good idea. She said keep going for as long as I was comfortable. For me that was only about 12 weeksish as then I could feel my 'bump' getting squished and I didn't like it.

I do yoga, rather than pilates, and the instructor just said to take it easy and not do anything that doesn't feel right in the early stages. The concerns are more to do with certain positions making you feel sick or dizzy, rather than any doing any harm to the baby afaik.

And congratulations! Come and join us on the June 2011 antenatal club thread! Smile

Congratulations!

I did pilates before being pregnant and my instructor advised that because she wasn't qualified to teach pregnant people, I should stop at 7/8 weeks and then start again at about 13/14 weeks with a class designed for pregnancy. I'm now 21 weeks and really enjoying my pregnancy pilates class - all of the exercises are designed around strengthening the bits you need and not over stretching the other bits, and there's no lying on your tummy or spending a long time lying on your back. Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies. I will let my instructor know on Friday and see what she says. I don't like the idea of telling anyone face to face yet because of what happened last time but rather that then do something I shouldn't!
