What happens during an appointment with the consultant

Hope some of you may be able to help. I have been sent an appointment with a consultant to discuss my care sduring pregnancy - I am not quite sure why I have asked my midwife and she said that the consultants here choose who they want to see. I had bleeding at 10 weeks and a low lying placenta at 20 weeks so its probably due to that although the last scan showed the placenta had moved. What I would like to know is will it just be talking or will they do an examination or scan? Would like to be prepared!
Thank you!

IME (consultant led care with my second baby) you may be seen by a consultant or a member of his/her team and they just ask questions, take your BP and may feel the baby and listen in with the doppler.

Assuming you're not at term I doubt they would want to do an internal. Tbh I have generally found doctors to be less thorough than midwives - they do the same checks but ask less questions- with the exception of my consultant who was very good.

I wish I knew. I have an appointment on Friday (I have to see a consultant because I have epilepsy and am taking medication to control it that could affect the baby). The appointment letter said I should expect to be there at least 2hrs or possibly the whole morning! I am only 9 weeks pregnant. What on earth are they going to do for 2hrs+?

3 hrs is beacuse you will probably have to see several different people - a midwife may weel test your urine and blood pressure and then the consultant will want to discuss your pregnancy / birth options. I also had to see a consultant midwife last time to debrief on my last childbirth experience. The hospitals are busy so it's best to be prepared to wait!

I had a consultant appointment to check the baby?s stomach etc. due to a potentially hereditary issue

I saw the registrar, and she done the normal checks I have at midwife appointments, plus a scan (as needed to check baby?s insides). I also had to have a blood test.

I wasn't expecting the scan as 20 week scan showed no cause for concern - so that was nice, although I think it depends on the reason for the appointment.

I was there nearly 2 hours, although most of the time was waiting to be seen, and then waiting again for the blood to be taken. As the consultant appointments at my hospital are held in the Maternity section, when I had to call up for my blood results, they were really lovely and friendly. I am sure if you call just to ask what to expect they can give you a guide based on the reason you have been called for an appointment.

Hope this helps

Hmmm, I suspected that most of the 2-3hrs would be taken up with waiting around. I could do without that really as I have to work the nightshift that night and would usually be asleep during the day. I tried to ring up and change the appointment but the next one was a month later on another date when I had to work a nightshift anyway. Oh well, I will take a good book with me.

Thanks so much for your responses. I went today and have to say it was a complete waste of time. It took over two hours and that was just waiting around and so hot inside with no water available - always makes me laugh considering there are pregnant women waiting so long! When I finally saw the consultant she hadnt read my notes properly so had to correct her a few times. Felt the baby for all of 2 seconds and measured my stomach with the tape measure round the wrong way?? Then said she had now decided I was low risk so no need to go back - quite relieved about that!
Stegasaurus take a book, take water and maybe a snack lol and if taking DH something to occupy him mine was bored out of his brain! Good luck hope everything is fine for you
