Baby with larger tummy at 21 week scan

I had my 21 week scan this morning and the baby was fit and healthy (yay!). The sonographer mentioned that the baby's stomach was large and that I needed to be scanned at 32 weeks to check it wasnt too big or else I may need to have the baby earlier.

Does anyone know what causes a big tummy. Is it my fault - am I eating the wrong things or is it just that some baby's growth is larger than others?

Also when they say I might have it sooner than expected does this mean being induced, c sectioned?

Does anyone have any advise for me?

You got me worried now! Sonographer said mine had an average size head and a large tummy and laughed and said he likes his food. Never mentioned it being a problem.

So sorry no advise but will watch this thread with interest.

Ps Don't think it can be anything we are eating i am 28 weeks now and only gained 6 lbs

Hi

I am being tested for gestational diabetes. I asked my diabetes nurse today about the risks associated with GD and she said a bigger baby as the stomache grows due to extra glucose. May be worth getting tested to rule it out.

Just spoke to my midwife who said that it could have been a) because baby had a full bladder (which he did have) or b) a warning sign that I could have the start of gestational diabetes. I do like sugar so I'm going to try and cut it out of my diet just to be on the safe side. She said not to worry though as the sonographer would have requested an earlier scan other than 32 weeks. Sorry to have worried you websticks only I wanted to ask to be on the safe side. I don't really want to end up injecting with insulin unless I really have to. The midwife said that gd can be controlled and reduce at this stage with diet. Worse case scenario is that I could end up having the baby induced at 38 weeks.
Good luck!

All of my babies had tummies big for dates and little tiny heads - when they were born they did indeed have big round tums and still had little heads but to no adverse effect. They are 3 normal sized children now with no worries at all - I think that we are all different shapes and sizes and so are our babies. Mine just happen to specialise in Father Christmas style tums.
