hi
I'm, 14 weeks, have only had my booking in, still waiting my first scan and wont be seeing my actual midwife, rather than a cover one for another week, and wanted you ask for your guidance on sleep patterns - I've heard / read that from 14 weeks you should only sleep on 1 side (left) but not your back
i usually only sleep well on my front, and occassionally my back
since ive found this out ive been trying to sleep on my left side with a dream geniw to help - and have suffered terribly, hideous dreams (woke up crying last night, but couldnt remember why), and waking 5 ish times in the night - consquently feeling shattered now!
I was fine till I knew all this!
is it ok to sleep on my front whilst i physically can, or is that a nono too, and has anyone else had this weird side effect too?
just wanted to gauge opinion before I see MW to chat to her about it!
thanks x

I think you should sleep in which ever position is comfortable.

By the end you will only be able to sleep on your sides as you can't breathe lying on your back and obviously on your front will be impossible!

I think it's fine to lie on your front (at the moment, assuming you have a small bump). And if you can raise and bend one of your legs up (like in recovery position type way) then you'll give your belly more room.

There is TMI info these days regarding simple things!

Sleep however it is comfy.
Iirc, as you get more pregnant your uterus might press on one of your major blood vessels, but if this was causing any problems you would roll over, according to the MW I had when I was pg.

Nature isn't stupid. Hope you can sleep now!

I asked my midwife this as I was paranoid about not sleeping on my left side. She said it doesn't matter, when you get heavy, you won't want to sleep on your back, can't sleep on your front and the left and right thing doesn't make a difference.

japhrimel · 26/09/2010 20:19

If you're comfy, don't worry about it.

When the bump gets bigger, it just won't be comfortable on your front. And if you're comfy on your back, then you should be fine - when bump presses on the blood vessels you'll start getting dizzy and sick on your back.

Lying on your left side is better, but personally I can't stay on my left all night so swap back and forth.

You're probably just stressing about your sleep position and so that's making you have bad dreams.

FWIW, I've had mental dreams all the way through. Think that might be a separate issue!

At 14 weeks you can sleep however you feel like. As you get further along and get more of a bump you should sleep on your left hand side when you can, although most people can't lie on their left side all night so need to switch from left to right a bit. You should try not to lie on your back, and obviously will be unable to lie on your front!!

I have had vivid nightmares throughout my pregnancy. I don't remember this from my first two pregnancies, but apparently it's a fairly normal thing to happen. It's eased off a bit now. (I'm 21 weeks tomorrow)I survived by having an hour long nap every evening.

Just sleep whichever way you are comfy. I've never heard of anyone being told not to sleep in a certain position.

Congratulations too.

Wanderingsheep · 27/09/2010 07:18

I'm 18 weeks and still sleeping on my front. I find it impossible to sleep any other way! We have a memory foam mattress which helps, as it sinks under my bump and makes it comfortable. I think it is still fine to sleep on your stomach even in later pregnancy, if you are still comfortable. I can't imagine it being very comfortable unless you piled the pillows up underneath.

They will tell you not to lie on your back in later pregnancy as your uterus is heavy and can constrict the blood flow to your heart, but you would start to feel ill before there were any problems, so don't worry about it of you still feel comfortable on your back. I think that they say that the best side to sleep on is your left as I think it helps to keep the baby in a good position.(I'm not sure though).

I'm 33 weeks and still sleeping on my back, but baby doesn't like me sleeping on my right and lets me know in no uncertain terms - there's masses of thrashing around inside bump until I turn over! You should sleep however is comfortable for you at the time.
