I'm 26 weeks and looking at all the clothes that have been brought for my DS already i was wondering who actually washes all the brand new clothes they are given either before the baby arrive or before they wear them?

Thanks

Always wash them before the baby wears them.

Each time, I washed them at around 38 weeks so they would still be fresh when baby arrived. Plus it was something to do other than sit around waiting. :)

When you get to 38 weeks you will want to wash everything, I reckon - nesting and all that. I think I may have washed my DD's baby clothes twice actually, and folded them all neatly in her drawers and everything.

TotorosOcarina · 26/09/2010 16:16

I've never washed new clothes before putting them on baby.

firsttimer78 · 26/09/2010 17:44

I've washed a few things (enough to get through a day or two at most) but don't want to do more in case LO comes out and nothing fits it!

lal123 · 26/09/2010 18:25

I've only ever washed stuff if it's got that funny "spent 2 years in a plastic bag smell"

Hevster · 26/09/2010 18:37

I wash stuff as soon as I get it, but only a couple of vests and sleepsuits in newborn in case they are a large baby

Cluds · 26/09/2010 19:14

I didn't wash anything with DS1 and DS2 (maybe because that was 10 and 7 years ago and we weren't told to?!) but for some reason I have this time round. I agree with sequins in that when you get to 38 weeks you will want to wash everything due to nesting! I started washing around about then - didn't have that much to wash anyway, just some muslins and about 6 baby grows.

smoggii · 26/09/2010 19:45

I have washed everything new except outerwear (coats/snowsuits) and dried and packed away in drawers already (28 weeks lol).

I had some fab second hand stuff from my friend that her DD was in for about 2 minutes, that had already been washed and packed away, all still smelled lovely and fresh so not washing that again (tho she said she wouldn't be insulted if i did but don't want take unnecessary work for myself).

I've already got way too much stuff, may be able to dress baby fresh every day and never do any washing - lol

I don't iron it all though just fold it tidy, it's too small, seems pointless.

Giddyup · 26/09/2010 19:59

I have washed all the new stuff but not bothered with the hand me downs. I don't know how long it will last though; once I have a baby to play with rathaer then just tiny clothes and blankets Smile

I washed everything with DD, and am now 35 weeks with next one and have washed everything for him too. Had to do it early this time round though as I have an exam when I am 38+6 so no time for house chores revision only.

Octaviapink · 27/09/2010 08:36

I never washed anything pre-wearing - IMHO it's a myth sold by manufacturers of washing powder! DD was a champion posseter so was only ever in anything for two hours anyway before it needed washing!

FindingMyMojo · 27/09/2010 09:52

clothes & fabric are routinely treated with chemicals to keep the fresh, mould free, wrinkle free during storage, transit & warehousing. Formaldehyde is widely used as are many other nasties - have a quick google on the subject for more info.

slimyak · 27/09/2010 10:35

I wash everything before wearing. Some places like M&S and The White complany will suggest washing before wearing due to the fire retardant chemicals they use in making the garments, other places don't. But as finding says they use a whole host of nasties in clothing production and you're newbie has very delicate skin.

I wash new stuff with 1/2 the detergent and in cold water as it's not mucky as such.

My DH has dodgy skin flare ups that are definately agrivated by production chemicals, so I feel I have the proof I need to pre wash. I also only use Ecover as it has no optical brighteners which are one of the main nasties for sensitive skin (doesn't get weaning food stains out though, or repeated milk stains for that matter).

I wash everything first for DS, also any sheets, towels etc for us. He has mild eczema and you're advised to. I have washed all the new baby clothes too - I hate the chemical smell of new clothes.
