Buscopan and Pregnancy

Am 35 weeks pregnant and have started getting nausea and stomach cramps (def not labour)over the past couple of weeks. Zantac has been helping but today am just bleeeuurrgh and had the runs last night and this morning. I think I have a low grade tummy bug.

Doc has prescribed buscopan, an anti-spasmodic. But, being a twit, I googled it and there are some contra-indications in pregnancy. Has anyone else taken it whilst pregnant? Help, I am bloody miserable.

The thing is if you google anything like 'so and so in pregnancy' then you will inevitably find something that says that you shouldn't have it.

Your Doctor has prescribed it for you and he will have been aware of any associated risks and will have measured them against your need for them. I haven't had buscopan during my pregnancy but your Doc wouldn't have given them to you if he didn't feel you needed them.

Someone will come along soon whose had them I'm sure, but in the meantime I hope you feel better soon.

I wouldn't ever Google medical stuff - you're more likely to get poor quality info. However, looking up stuff on reputable website is often a good idea.

The BNF says:

"Pregnancy manufacturer advises use only if potential benefit outweighs risk"

Possible side effects:

"Side-effects Side-effects of antimuscarinics include constipation, transient bradycardia (followed by tachycardia, palpitation and arrhythmias), reduced bronchial secretions, urinary urgency and retention, dilatation of the pupils with loss of accommodation, photophobia, dry mouth, flushing and dryness of the skin. Side-effects that occur occasionally include confusion (particularly in the elderly), nausea, vomiting, and giddiness; very rarely, angle-closure glaucoma may occur."

If you're not happy taking it, go back and talk to your doctor.

Are you taking something for rehydration?

Hi. Thanks. Spoke to him again and, if it doesn't let up, I'm going to fast for 24 hours to see if that knocks it on the head. Just need to keep fluids up.
