I read somewhere that commercial mayo is ok but to avoid homemade mayo.

I have a feeling that fresh homemade mayo is a no no because it has raw egg in it - however I think readymade stuff is OK

Pixiefish · 06/09/2005 13:09

readymade stuff is ok. it's because of the raw egg in the fresh stuff which you should avoid. You should also avoid undercooked egg

supersonic · 06/09/2005 13:10

tahnks you - i am so glad ot hear this it also said it has pasteurised egg yolk is this ok? Believe it or not this will be my second child I just can't remember worrying so much about things like this.

im sure the readymade stuff is fine. but if you have had a miscarriage previously and something awful happend this time, then you would feel awful

Kelly1978 · 06/09/2005 13:12

dotn worry abt it. commercial mayo is fine. Homecooked mayo is usually fine too. it only when u use eggs from eggs that are not marked with the lion symbol u should be wary as they may nt have been vaccinated against salmonella.

paseurised is fine see here:

It is important to ensure that eggs are cooked well until the whites and yolks are firm (and not runny). This prevents Salmonella food poisoning. Avoid eating homemade foods like mayonnaise and tiramisu which contain raw eggs. Do note that it is safe to eat tiramisu, mayonnaise or any such raw egg preparation when bought from the shops as their recipes contain pasteurised eggs.

supersonic, have you no morning sickness? don't think I could even have read the words "onion and garlic dip" in first three months of pregnancy...

RedZuleika · 06/09/2005 14:47

I had cracking morning sickness - but I sometimes got the nibblies which only be alleviated by poppodums, lime pickle and a self-made accompaniment of raw onion, tomato and coriander... Just as well I wasn't in the mood for rumpy, as I don't think my husband would have come near me..

iota - thanks very much for that info that has made me feel loads better and will munch away.
ghostofnatt - thankfully I have no sickness -but I guess that could change at anytime - with my first DD I always felt nauseous when cleaning my teeth but that was about it really hopefully I will be lucky again.
