Waking up choking

Hi

I am 31+5 weeks pregnant, first baby.

Please any advice welcome I am sick with tiredness.

This is the second night in a row I have woken up choking.

I had heart burn previously, but this is more like my whole throat has filled up, as if I was being sick, but not acidic like heartburn.

I hardly slept last night, frightened to go back to sleep, so tonight I slept propped up slightly on the couch, which hasn't stopped it but made slightly less scary when I have woke up.

I have only managed 3 hours sleep but can't nod off again as I am frightened.

Also I think I have some kind of hernia protruding over my ribs- a longish bulge of about 10 cm- Don't know if its connected.

Any advice?

No advice but I feel your pain! I'm so tired but awake with terrible heart burn that feels like a combination of acid in my throat and my dinner..... Makes me feel sick too. If I am in any other position than totally upright, its horrendous... Thus despite my exhaustion I too am still awake on MN! :(

Thanks, excitedm2b.

Been sickly tired all day, so foolishly thought that I might be so exhausted I would sleep tonight!

Make that 3 of us. I am losing at least 3 nights sleep a week and have been for the last 3/4 weeks.

I get woken coughing with acid or my dinner in my throat if I ate to late. Then my bump wakes up and makes the acid worse by turning over and over.

My dh has a hiatus hernia (basically an ineffective valve at the top of his stomach) and he has to take a one a day tablet to control his acid otherwise he wakes up with food in his throat as you described and this is effectively what happens to us in pregnancy as all the valves relax.

As for the hernia can't help there I would suggest you see your gp in the morning. I'm off there for some more effective acid drugs cos gaviscon is not cutting it.

Definately off to the gp in the morning...or should that be later :)

The baby is now adding to it by doing somersaults!

How did you get on Andie?

I have been prescribed Ranitidine and have my fingers crossed for a full nights sleep.

Have heard wonderful things about it on here though so hopefully it will work for me.

Couldn't get get a flipping app for todayAngry

Just going to eat really bland stuff, and nothing except a sip of water after 6pm, with the Gaviscon on standby.

I will try sleeping slightly upright again as it was some improvement on the night before in terms of when I did wake up with my throat choking it was easier to deal with.

Got my third NCT class tonight, and although the group is great (never stop laughing) I could really do without it.

Well just in case anyone reads this I combined all the tips I had read.

I propped the top of the bed up with a couple of huge books, didn't eat or drink anything after 7pm (Except water)and dosed myself with gavascon just before I slept...And it worked! I feel so much better, after half a nights sleep (Still having night sweats, toilet trips, but can drop straight back to sleep after those!)

As for the hernia...erm that was the little ones leg!

LOL at the 'hernia' Grin I guess this is your first. Alien tummy movements are part of the fun.

Glad you got some sleep. Ranitidine is my saviour. I did not even wake for a toilet break last night and didn't feel sick this morning. Well not until my dd threw up everywhere, she is now sick but at least we weren't both fighting for the toilet!

Waking up choking could be some kind of sleep apnea it is related to asthma if you have that? I have asthma and have the same problem waking up in the night scares DH to death!
I will try the tips from Andie20521 but going to GP as well!
