Pain in the Bum (literally)

I'm currently 14+3 with my first and for a few weeks now have experienced a sharp pain in my bum where my hip bone meets my leg bone randomly. Over the last few days its got much worse. I work full time in a desk job and today I couldn't get from my desk to the printer without wincing from the pain. It hurts to stand up, sit down, walk and bend over. It does seem to ease with walking but I worry this isn't helping (and it means suffering a few minutes whilst the pain subsides)

Since getting home tonight I've really seized up and can hardly move my right leg for fear of pain. I've taken paracetamol and will have a hot shower later.

I am visting my GP tomorrow and hopefully will get some answers but I wondered if this is something anyone else has experienced? Does it seem likely to be pregnancy related this early on?

The pain doesn't seem to shoot anywhere which makes me think its not sciatica and I don't seem to have the usual SPD symptons.

Thank you in advance.

Hi *haloflo" Smile

I had exactly the same time at 15/16 weeks and its to do with sitting down at a desk all day! I have to make sure i take regular breaks to stretch & pregnancy yoga has worked wonders. You might want to give that a try.

Hi ellesbelles Thanks for your reply. A quick google implies there are no pregnancy yoga classes in my area but I will ask my GP tomorrow as surely that can't be right. I live in a small city not a tiny village!

Dare I ask if the pain has eased at all for you? Please tell me it won't continue for the next 6 months?

sounds like SPD which is common in pregnancy. ask midwife for excercises and maybe support belt xx

I went to one yoga class & the next day it was gone! I get it when I miss yoga or spend too long sitting in one place. I cannot stress the importance of yoga or some kind of stretching - it really does help.

Maybe they might do some yoga at your local leisure centre? If you cant find a preg yoga class, then you can always ring up a normal one & ask the teacher if you can attend - sometimes they can just change a few of the poses for you to accomodate.

But hang in there - it does get better. I think during the first part of the 2nd trimester is when your uterus starts expanding and then it eases off a bit! xx

Hi Halo,
have a look at this page it might be sciatica and not SPD, in which case there are some stretches/exercises you can do to help (yoga helped me a lot) xx

Hello,

I'm 32 weeks and had this pain on Monday night.. Went to midwife yesterday and got immediately referred to physio who diagnosed a strained tendon in my back, caused by lifting too much... Now I'm signed off for a week for it to rest as there is a major risk of a slipped disc Shock Hope yours is more trivial! :)

Hi, thanks for all the replies.

Turns out I have sciatica. Been told to keep moving, take paracetamol and wait for an appointment for maternity physio (3-4 weeks)

elles There isn't any yoga at my local leisure centre but the uni nearby do normal yoga. I rang them & they said I could come and talk to the instructor. I've also had a recommendation for a dvd which I may try. Several reviews on amazon say it helped their sciatica.

chance I'll take a look at those exercises now. Thank you.

soozle You poor thing. I hope you are getting lots of rest whilst off.

ooh which dvd?

podmumlet · 22/09/2010 23:10

Hi haloflo

I could have written your original post myself :)

I too had the same shooting pain in my bum cheek which was debilitating. Would be wincing down the corridor at work with every step....

I went to the GP on the Thursday and was referred to the physio and seen the following Wednesday.

The physio informed me that this kind of pain is not uncommon in pregnancy, she had a look to make sure that everything was roughly aligned (i.e. no bulging discs or anything?), and said I could take paracetemol and try do gentle stretches. She said that if it got worse, I could self refer back and there are belt supports, crutches etc that could help.

A week has passed since the physio, and the pain has definitely eased a bit. Oddly enough, it seems to be only slightly discomforting, but in both bum cheeks now!! While I am still aware of it, I am certainly not wincing in pain as much at all anymore.

When I was researching all this online before going to the GP, I also found out about Piriformis Syndrome which is very common in pregnancy, and is exactly like the pains I think we are experiencing. It is closely related to sciatica - but different. With sciatica, you get shooting pains down your legs, which I certainly wasn't getting. It was more like the pain was in my bones/bum cheeks. So, it could be that?

Irrespective, I think that the solution is the same (assuming its not a something more serious). Take regular breaks from your desk, stretch as much as you can, take paracetemol if needed, and keep an eye on it in case you need a belt support or something.

Hope the pain eases soon...

podmum Glad you are starting to feel better - very reassuring. How far along are you? I've actually found today much easier. I've been getting up regularly, taking paracetamol and sitting more upright. I've found my holding my body straighter when going from a sitting to a standing position it seems to help.

I'm also sat on a hot microwavable wheat pad right now which is heavenly.

Your diganosis sounds about right, the pain doesn't move. I will look up Piriformis Syndrome thanks.

laregazza I'm getting this dvd

I had piriformis syndrome when not pregnant, tried many treatments which didn't work BUT acupuncture fixed me up (very weird though to be lying with pins sticking out of your arse though!). I have just started to get the same feelings in the other butt cheek (am 23 wks prego). I find stretching it(put ankle of affected side onto opposite knee and lean forward or similar) helps alot but I may consider the acupuncture again as mine seems to be getting worse. I actually find lying on my side aggravates the problem but sadly that's what you have to do when pregnant :(
