car seat prams ??

dont shops sell proper prams anymore ? A lot of them are either buggy types, which seem flimsy and not very warm and comfortable.

or car seat types, where you see newborns all squashed in a sitting up postion, and a wacking big seat belt across their chest, surely this does a babies spine no good.

my neighbour has one of these and she doesnt even have a car ???

I think people buy buggies that will last until their toddler can walk competently, so they don't have to buy another system later. There is a credit crunch, after all!

As far as I know, traditional prams are only really suitable for babies up to about 6 months, or a year at a push. Then you hve to splash out on a buggy anyway, so you might as well get something that will last you for several years instead.

you can buy a 3 in one pram, which starts as a carrycot and then you add the body part for a pushchair when the baby is about 6 months.

but surely comfort and warmth for a tiny baby is more important than buying a flimsy buggy, just so it will last.

For DS I bought a Jane carrera pro with matrix carseat which is a carseat that lies flat like a carrycot but also sits up for in the car. Can also use it lying flat in the car. Has about 4 or 5 recline settings. So best of both worlds. I was always worried I'd buy a pram & end up with a baby that didn't like lying flat for very long or at all! I still use my Jane (DS is now 3) as a pushchair & will be setting it back up with carseat/carrycot for bubba when it arrives in 5weeks or so!

I used the car-seat/pram combo with both of mine and their spines are just fine. I also means you can lift them out of the car and into the pram without waking them up, and once they grow out of the car seat, you have a nice spacious pushchair waiting for you.

All the traditional prams I've ever seen out and about look a real pain to push. One woman had her back hunched over cos the handle bar was so low, and had to bump the front wheels up to make even the slightest turn, while my swivel wheels turn on a sixpence.

Each to their own, I guess.

Bugaboo has a carry cot bit (so lie-flat pram top) which attaches to the frame, you then switch this out at 6 months for the reclinable seat...same goes for a lot of brands...

Some people do need to buy something that will last though.
3 in 1 type prams are so much more expensive than a GRaco travel system that will do from birth until out the buggy.
I havd a travel system for dd 7 years ago and for various reasons hated it so bought a 3 in 1 off a friend second hand so I was able to afford it that way (friend gave me it for peanuts really)

Also like loopy said they are now becoming the norm because they are affordable, convenient and will do for a long time without needing another buggy. The shops that sell them also do't shout enough about proper car seat use for small babies, I had no idea about it until I found forums when dd was small I just never used the car seat out of the car because of how dd looked in it.

The way I see it is that they are no more cramped and squashed in a car seat than they are in a sling or some other types of baby-wearing equipment, and they stay in those for ages in some cases if they are being carried all day. And looking at a car seat that sits the baby partially upright, I feel that would be a better position to take an impact in than one that has them more flat, because then a forward force from an impact is born by the flat of their back rather than the straps against their shoulders, IYSWIM. Just my opinion, I'm no expert.

Of course, I agree you wouldn't want to keep them in the car seat for more than a couple of hours because they would get sweaty if nothing else, but I think that would be the case with any car seat.

I have a bugaboo cameleon, which is probably the most insanely expensive option (we were given it by v generous MIL), but it has a carry cot, or the car seat can clip on. I love it, and it's still going strong for DS now (just 2, but ginormous).

I think the guidelines are something like no more than 3 hours in a car seat at a time (although i may be remembering that wrongly), so it's a good idea to have something that will lie flat in the early days, unless you're planning on using a carrier/sling a lot.

Isn't there a Maclaren that can lie completely flat? That shouldn't be too expensive.

EmmaKateWH · 21/09/2010 15:50

I agree with those saying to get a bugaboo cameleon - has a proper lie flat carry cot pram top with an aerosleep mattress for the first six months, then a seat unit. Also, car seat can clip on if required. Bit pricey but well worth it and can be sold on second hand afterwards.

We have an Icandy Peach. You buy the stroller for later on and the carrycot attachment for newborn. Also can fit the maxi cosi car seat on it too. Not cheap but should last for a long time.

trixie123 · 21/09/2010 18:57

i candy cherry also has carrycot then pushchair seat and you can buy adaptors to fit the maxi cosy car seat on too. It is expensive but less so than the bugaboo.

moominmarvellous · 21/09/2010 19:06

Same here have had a Quinny Buzz and now have a Bugaboo Cameleon which both come with carrycot options so you can lay them flat. The car seat can be attached as a seat for both and I suppose you just decide what option is best for different outings.

i have a teutonia spirit s3 for ds and am getting the double later this year. it has a carrycot and then a lie flat seat for later on. ds is massive at just over 2 and i still use it rf for him. i agree about not liking the travel systems. i could put the car seat on the chasis but mostly used the carrycot, ds went straight back to sleep as he was used to it.
