Would I be wrong to refuse blood tests during pregnancy?

I am currently 12wks & will be having my booking in appt & 1st scan on weds. After reading the leaflets sent by the hospital re hepatitis & HIV,I don't see any reasons for the tests this time. My twins are 2 & I had the tests when I was pg with them-all negative. I haven't put myself at risk of contracting them, unless its possible when I had my c-section. I don't want to take unneccessary risks but on the other hand I'm fed up with feeling like a pincushion!

I don't see any point - I think I had them with ds3 but only cos they were taking the blood anyway - I didn't think for one minute I had either but at least I now know!

Didn't have them with ds1 or ds2 though.

I didn't have any of the screening tests either.

If it's because of the stab you're worried about, then I'd have thought that they would all be done in one single stab, with the other bloods you'd need to have done (blood count etc).

I'm trying to avoid having ANY needles stuck in me this time. Doesn't bother me that much just don't see the point (ha,ha) if its not neccessary.
I think I'm just feeling rebellious this time cos its my 3rd pg.(Also have an older daughter)

I think they do them at the same time as the rubella/iron level checks so it doesn't make too much difference needle wise!

I've just had mine done - got al of them done, had some done with my M/C but tbh DH and I both agreed to get everything done again to be safe so we've had the HIV/Hep done etc althou the m/w said if I didn't want them didn't have to have them done - but it's only an extra bottle, doubt we'll have it for a second child thou.

we're not going in for the downs testing either.

hi
nothing wrong with refusing hiv etc, i have a near 2yr old and am 25wks. i had blood tests but mainly the iron level ones etc.

ei23mummy · 05/09/2005 15:11

hey dont worry about refusing the blood tests if you really dont want them done. if youv already had negative results recently for hiv/hep c then they may say you dont need them anyway esp if you are still with the same partner. plus having the hiv/hep c affects any insurance you may decide to take out e.g house, life car etc cos you have to declare it so if you are sure you dont want them then just tell your m/w- they cant force you into anything you dont want to do!! good luck on your appt!!

No reason to have them. I tried to get away without any too. I knew (well, 99.999999999% I suppose) that I didn't have HIV/Hepatitis. I didn't want to know what my iron levels were - they're supposed to dip in pg anyway and if they know, they give you grief about it. Didn't want to know about DS etc. Can't remember what else they test for but we got down to the rubella one. I knew I was immune to it when they tested during my first pg. But the midwife said immunity can change and I might not be immune now! I guess I didn't really need to know - there isn't a lot you can do, once you're already pg is there. Avoid people with spots I suppose.

I dont think it affects insurance anymore. Im sure that theyve changed it if your tested because your pg.
