hi i'm 30 weeks pregnant, about 3 weeks ago i got really bad pelvic pain like a aching pain around my pubic bone area, and at the base of my spine after a bit of rest and i was ok. Now it seems to of come back but seems to come back really easily and even today after resting is still there,i have a 3 year old so obviously full rest isnt an option. Could this be spd? it hurts when i lift my legs up (like to get them on the sofa etc),hurts when i walk etc. It does ease off a little bit if i sit with my legs tightly shut and driving isnt too much of a problem although hard breaking hurts. I go back to my midwife in 2 weeks so i will def mention it again.

Could well be.... I succumbed last week at 38+5. Not impressed!! The things you mention like hurting when you lift your legs really does sound like SPD. If you can get an earlier appointment with the MW or your GP to get referred to a specialist physio, that would be a good idea. A lot can change in 2 weeks!! In my case, cos I am so close to due date so hopefully there's not much time for it to deteriorate, the physio decided not to give me a support belt, but to do some manipulation and teach me the correct ways to stand, sit, walk, lie down, turn over in bed, etc. It's not going to make it "better" - only way to do that is to get this child out! But hopefully it will stop things getting worse and will ease the pain (she typed having had a particularly bad day today...) I think there are some SPD/pelvic girdle pain support groups on the web that provide good advice over how to move correctly. This might help you in the short term. But it's no substitute for getting a proper diagnosis and some individual treatment. You also want ot have it documented in your maternity notes and written in HUGE LETTERS on your birth plan - there are certain positions you should not labour in (physio will advise) and you will be told not to open your legs beyond a certain distance. MWs will need to know this. Will also need to be careful if you have an epidural - the numbness may tempt you to open your legs "too wide". Physio also told me to be careful if I am in the birthing pool - the support and comfort the water gives may lull me into a false sense of security where, again, I open my legs too wide. So sorry it looks like this has happened to you - best of luck XX

Hi Pinky! I'm 33 weeks pregs with my 4th, never had this before but last week I started getting pain in the front of my pelvis, lifting legs and walking too fast really hurts! And yesterday I had a shooting pain down to my right knee every time I moved... Argh. I figure it is SPD but it's not excruciating so I'm not too worried. However, wondering whether I ought to stop walking in the mornings? I've been jogging then at 22 weeks went to walking 2.5 miles in the morning, and not sure whether keeping it up will help or make the SPD worse. Anyone know?

cardamomginger · 22/09/2010 10:10

Be VERY careful....! If I were you I'd get a referral to a specialist physio ASAP, get it assessed and get some individual advice! I speak as someone who in the space of just a few days went from still going to the gym to not being able to stand up without crying! I don't think I did anything daft to myself - just that these things can suddenly and dramatically get worse. Depending on your particular circumstances you might find that walking is OK, as long as you do it "properly" if you see what I mean. Things like incline and speed might also need to be taken into consideration. But a physio will need to advise you. Hope it doesn't get any worse - good luck!

Thanks Cardmomginger! I hope so too, as I still have awhile to go. I was wondering whether I should stop because the pain was really bad yesterday, but I walked this morning and the pain is way better today (I have slowed the pace down a lot in the last few weeks anyway). If it does get any worse, I have an appt with the midwife next week so will address it then if need be. Thanks for the advice, sorry to hijack the thread, pinky!

pinkyp · 22/09/2010 13:36

lol i dont mind hijacking!! I had this pain at about 27 weeks but not as bad and if i rested it went, and i thought it'd passed but it came back. This time when i rest it doesnt go and on a night time i hardly move as its too painful. Rang mw and she's reffered me to physio got to phone up tomorrow for an appointment she says it deffo sounds like spd.

Ouch, sorry it's so bad at night! My Mom sent me one of those long pregnancy pillows which I hadn't used until the spd started, I find it really helps because I stuff some under my bump and the bottom half between my knees and it really helps ease any pressure so I can get comfy more easily. Might be worth a try? Or even just use regular pillows? The other nice thing about the pregnancy pillow is that its handy (being sort of u-shaped) after the birth for supporting baby while breastfeeding, particularly in the first few days/weeks when you are still a bit tender round the middle/down there.

pinkyp · 22/09/2010 14:19

thank you, think i might have to invest in one of those, i've seen some in tk max that wernt too expensive. I've just been using the quit rolled up under my bump and inbetween legs and then i use my dressing gown as a blanket lol

Gatecrashing as an SPD recoverer - take it very easy and don't think you can walk and do normal stuff, it can inflame your joints all the more and take recovering even longer. Keep kness together, maybe don't try to roll over in bed.
For me this started at 18 weeks and felt as if I needed a good stretch/run to sort myself out. Wish I hadn't bothered. It just got worse from takiong a few steps.
The best thing to do, is rest. Good Luck to everyone x

pinkyp · 23/09/2010 14:51

well i got my physio appointment for tomorrow,it feels a bit better today after resting most of yesterday so i went for a little walk round town, regretting it a little now :S

I had SPD in my pregnancy. I couldn't get out of bed if lying on my back, i had to grab the side cabinet and pull myself onto my side first. It was very painful to walk and get in and out of the car or bath etc. Nothing works either, they'll advise you to take paracetamol...DOES NOT HELP and i was advised of a pelvic support belt but everyone else that i knew with SPD said this does nothing to relieve the pain. My SPD was diagnosed at around 25 weeks. I'm sorry you are suffering, it really puts a downer on pregnancy but make sure ur pampered often :) xxxx

Good Luck with everything

pinkyp · 23/09/2010 16:54

Thank you Kim, I'm actually having my hair done tomorrow :) I wanted to try walking today as a test too, coz i felt loads better when i woke up and thought maybe i dont have it coz surely i wouldnt feel better etc but now its just awful again. I agree with u i cant imagine paractamol helping at all tbh see what physio says 2moro

Hi PinkyP

I am 29 weeks tomorrow with DC1 and I have had SPD/sciatica for the last two months I think, it is excruciating and can sometimes stop you in your tracks.
I have also suffered coccyxdinia which is inflammation of the tailbone, this + the above problems make it impossible to move around get sleep and get out of bed in the mornings but I am still working and have no choice !

I have had physio on the NHS who gave me some stretches to do, I have had private physio who did some soft tissue manipulation and I have had acupuncture (one session but did not enjoy it !). I am now due to go back to physio and to go and see a chiropractor (has anyone had any experience of a chiropractor in pregnancy??) The registrar suggested I go and see a orthopaedic consultant to have my spine checked (not that this was of any use as I know I have not had any back problems prior to pregnancy) and he just suggested I attend their physio which I doubt will make a difference.

All I have been told is to use hot water bottle and take paracetamol which I have done (am loathed to do) but if excruciating then I will. The pain which is shooting down back of both legs has now taken another turn and likes to travel to my right knee cap at the front and this is an absolute killer. I know what you are going through and they have told me that I may just have to put up with this until the baby comes ! I do hope it stops there, I have read on this forum women who have suffered SPD even after birth !

I know this is not of much use, and every women is different but just thought I would share with you what I have been through !

Good luck :)

Sounds like SPD to me as well. I started with it at 16 weeks and it has gotten so painful now (I am 30 weeks). At least if your only feeling symptoms now its not going to get too bad before you give birth. I can barely get myself up out of the bath and driving or sitting in one position really hurts. I was so sad when I realised it was SPD because there is nothing they can do. I have physio on the 2nd of October but I feel like its hardly worth it now! Its made being pregnant difficult and painful but to be honest I would take this over the nausea and vomiting I had for the first 17 weeks any day! Its not fun tho! Sleep with a pillow between your legs and dont think you can walk up stairs too quickly as that sets mine off.

pinkyp · 23/09/2010 18:59

mines trying to lift my legs up where it hurts the most like onto the sofa, and theresno way i can elevate them (tried to but my legs on top of dh as his was laid at the opposite end of the sofa and no way could i do that! When its bad it kills but today hasnt been too bad but generally i pay for it at night / the next day. I struggle to get up from the floor, baths etc. Driving hurts a little but i'm swapping cars with dh tomorrow so that should help (i have a polo he has a big mondeo). Hope everyone's pain eases soon for you all :)
