SPD/PGP - Is there anything else I can do?

Hi, I'm 27 weeks pg and have just been signed off work with SPD/pelvic girdle pain. The pain started at about 14 weeks but it took ages to get referral to physio. I saw physio last week, but by then the pain had become very bad, particularly when sitting and walking. When I went back to work after a week off last week it was apparent I could no longer sit for long in my chair.

I've had Occupational Health look at my work station and although they changed my chair this hasn't helped. I've been given a support belt which helps with walking a little, and some exercises to do. Other than that, the physio just recommended I go and see the doctor re painkillers.

Saw doc Fri who prescribed codeine, signed me off for 2 weeks but said to prepare myself as this could be it in terms of work this pregnancy. I don't want to take the codeine as it makes me woozy and have read it is addictive and baby can suffer withdrawal too if take it in last trimester. Paracetamol not working.

Luckily, DD is in nursery 3 days per week and I can still drive although painful so I can lie on the sofa for those days, but I feel a bit useless and down and obviously sore! It is keeping me awake at night now too.

I have been trying to find a private physio in my area who will manipulate my pelvis but they are all a bit wary. I've looked up all the stuff like keep legs together in/out car and rolling over in bed.

Is there anything else I can do or try? I did have an amazing pregnancy massage which helped but at £50 a throw I can't have one often.

TIA

If you can afford it see a chiropractor who has taken additional courses in treating pregnant women. Mine was a godsend and after a few weeks of treatment I was virtually pain free. Think treatments were about £25 a time.

Thanks robino, will google chiropractors too and do a ring round to see if one in my area who'll treat me.

If you happen to be near York I can recommend one!

Ah, opposite end of the country unfortunately, but thanks anyway!

Sounds like you're doing the right things re OT etc. Have you been offered crutches yet? Once you get your head round it, they're fabulous. They really take the pressure off.

Please, please don't stress about taking codeine. I took it for about 3 months plus stronger stuff at night and was advised to stop 3 days before the baby was induced (early at 38wks due to spd). He was fine and so was I.

One word of caution - if you do take it then please make sure you also take lactulose. I didn't (thought I'd be fine with plenty of liquid & sweetcorn Grin and I wasn't. I had constipation like you would not believe...

Thanks button I was wondering why I've been feeling a bit bunged up as I have been taking it sporadically this week. Fun!

I haven't been offered crutches. I was told to do exercises for 4-6 weerks and then to go back if necessary. Physio didn't seem too hopeful that it would improve, rather that it would hopefully not get any worse. I did a little bit of walking (well shuffling) around the shop today and with the belt on it wasn't so bad.

Unfortunately, the physio is probably right IME. However, crutches should offer you a bit more freedom.

I take it this is a specialist obstetric physio you've been referred to?
