I've got a fasting blood glucose test first thing tomorrow and I know I'm not supposed to eat anything after tonight but does anyone know if I can drink? I think I can have water but just wanted to check.

hi, i had one a few months ago and wasn't allowed anything from midnight, but my friend at a different hospital had to fast from 10pm but was allowed water. Confused

good luck!

:)

I'm pretty sure its water only, otherwise you may make your sugar high.

Fingers crossed you get a neg result

spiderbabymum · 19/09/2010 21:24

No food
No drink
from midnight

if you have essential medications to take in the am you can take them but only with a Sip of water

Hi, I had a test a couple of months ago and was told to have nothing but water after 10pm the previous night. Hope that helps and that the test goes well.

Just a tip- take something with you to eat afterwards- I nearly fainted with mine and had to mug the man with the trolley for sweets. BTW was negative despite fainting.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll not drink to be on the safe side...oops, 9.30, better run and have an entire tub of icecream a couple of pints of water to tide me over.

i was told nothing but water after 10pm the night before - good luck!

tattycoram · 19/09/2010 21:39

No no, just water. I had a tiny bit of tea and they made me do it again!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 19/09/2010 22:06

You're allowed water. I'd advise it - when I had mine done last time, I was a bit dehydrated and my veins collapsed and wouldn't cooperate with the needle. Sad

SquallyRose · 19/09/2010 22:15

I've got mine tomorrow and was told I could have water but nothing else from 10 tonight

Muser · 19/09/2010 22:16

You're allowed water. Not drinking water for that long is NOT a good thing. You'll end up dehydrated. I have my hospital letter here and it says water is fine, everything else not. But you need the water to keep you hydrated.

Second the food for after. I was feeding ds (10 8 born and the reason for the test) who was a hungry baby. Took him with me and had to feed during the testing, when I came to leave I felt very light headed.

pancakeisuptheduff · 20/09/2010 23:11

Thanks for the tip debka and tibni; afterwards I fell upon the packet of cereal bars I took along like a ravening beast. Now it's just fingers crossed for a negative. Fingers crossed for you too, squallyrose.

Drink at midnight but make it your last drink before going to bed. Take a cereal bar or something snacky and a bottle of water to drink after the test. You will need it.

I was instructed not to drink after midnight for mine. Then again I wasn't pregnant at the time.

funkychunkymunky · 20/09/2010 23:23

You can defo have water
