As long as you are measured properly there is no reason why you can't continue wearing wired until the baby is born. I'm 38+4 and still wearing mine (2nd child) and am dreading moving into my BF bras (gthey are hideous and I am not small. (MW told me wires were okay btw).

Muser · 19/09/2010 21:12

You can wear underwire bras throughout your pregnancy as long as they're properly fitted. If any part of the underwire of your current bras is pressing on breast tissue then you need refitting. As long as the wire is not resting on breast tissue then you're fine. I am an E/F cup and there is no way I'm giving up my underwires.

I think it all depends on you.

I'm 27+5 and my boobs have hardly grown at all (probably TMI) so I'm still wearing good wired bras, I'm up a back size though so i've had to get new ones.

I'll have to get measured closer to the time.

Hmm...I'm usually a 34B and they didn't seem to change much in my last pg but went to a 34E when the milk came in (that was a shock, I can tell you!) However, they're already squishing out of the sides of my bras.

Maybe a trip to M&S is in order then...Smile

Thanks for your advice ladies xx

Oh god. Don't go to M&S, they are fairly awful at bra fitting. John Lewis or Debenhams tend to be better. If you're in London Rigby & Peller is fantastic.

Anywhere where they come at you with a tape measure should be avoided. Good bra fitters do it all by eye.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 19/09/2010 22:10

Am 26 weeks and clinging to my wired bras! They all fit (I've bought two lots since I became pregnant) and since I'm now an F, there's no way I'm going back to the horrible, unsupportive, unshapely things I put up with in my last pregnancy.

M&S sucks big time, as does Mothercare. John Lewis pretty good, but they do get a bit prickly about wired bras if that's what you decide you want. Bravissimo great if you live near one. R&P is, as Muser said, The Shit when it comes to bra fitting. Boob heaven. Grin

cardamomginger · 19/09/2010 23:33

BRAVISSIMO!!!!

NowPanicAndFreakOut · 19/09/2010 23:36

Muser and ReshapeWhileDamp I couldn't agree more abut M&S. They must have a ten minute lesson that tells them all boobs are the same shape. I once went and their tape measure made me a 34A - both John Lewis and Rigby & Peller (by eye) agreed I was 30-32C (which fitted perfectly). I can see being a bit out - though they shouldn't be - but over a back size and two cup sizes is really pushing it.

Am now 16 weeks and have grown to a DD according to Rigby (which is v expensive) so I bought one bra with them (guilt!) and went off to Primark and got the right size...

Back to OP... both MW and Rigby agreed with what Muser said - that as long as the wire isn't pressing on any breast tissue then wire is fine...

DetectivePotato · 19/09/2010 23:38

I have found M & S to be very good. Debenhams were rubbish. Depends where you are and who you have on the day.

mousebacon · 20/09/2010 07:33

Ooh I wish I was near a rigby and peller...

Right, will hit john lewis instead, not sure bravissimo will let me through the door with such petit boobs :-)

What exactly is the risk of wearing the wrong size underwired bra?

Muser · 20/09/2010 08:05

Risks of wearing the wrong size is that the wires press into the milk ducts and damage them.

LifesComplicated · 21/09/2010 11:43

Other risks of wearing the wrong size are back pain, shoulder problems, sagging breasts, stretch marks, discomfort, and (less serious) a really poor shape under clothes.

That said, I'm in completely the wrong size (I'm 8+5 pg and already spilling out of all bras) so I'm gonna need new ones sharpish.
Im really confused whether to get maternity bras (I'm about a 36E I think and quite saggy from yo-yo dieting so I look AWFUL without underwiring). But everything I read says we should avoid underwired.
But if I go for maternity bras I'm worried I'll outgrow them as I progress.
I'm on zero income and totally skint so I can't afford any expensive mistakes!

Any advice gratefully received!

I've been out of my normal bras since about week 7 - I was coming home and taking them off because I couldn't stand having them on me! I went to Debenhams and got some reasonably plain non underwired bras in black and white, a cup and back size up, that are ok. I bloody hate not having underwiring though, as you end up with boob sausage. I had heard underwiring was a complete no no, so it's interesting to hear that it's ok if the right size.
A friend of mine who buys underwear for a living swears by wearing sports bras for the whole pregnancy. She said they were brilliant and that her boobs are still in the same place they were before she had a baby. Something to bear in mind. I am going to try that for sleeping in as mine now hurt if I lie on my side. I don't even have a paticularly large chest!

FindingMyMojo · 21/09/2010 16:13

can I just say NOT from mothercare. I tried on some nonwired maternity bras there over 3 years ago now & I'm still traumatised by the way they turned my rather lovely heaving bosom into a couple of flat dog ears flapping in the wind. Shock
