I am 13 wks t with my second child. I've had to spend the last few days in hospital with hyperemesis gravidum, and have never seen such low standards and poor care in a hospital in my life. I'm not going to name and shame... but they forgot I was there pretty much.... forgot to give me meds, food, didnt see a doc til 9.30pm, left me sitting in a soiled bed for six hours.... the list goes on.
I want to know if there are any healthcare plans i can take out in pregnancy that would cover me for the birth. I cant bear the thought of having my child there.

So very sorry to hear you're having such a bad experience! I assume you're on a general ward. Have you had a tour of the maternity unit at your hospital? Very different staffing levels available on a maternity unit to a general ward and usually a much more stable staffing group, so it could be a whole different ballgame! It might be worth looking to see what the ratings and reviews are like online.

Most insurance companies don't cover pregnancy. Not sure if there's many healthcare plans available. You may have to pay full whack to have your baby delivered in a private hospital. I know the one near me charges £4,000 and that's assuming you're only in for one night!

Is there another NHS hospital within reasonable distance of you? You do have a right to switch NHS hospitals if you're not happy.

Hope you feel better soon. Hyperemesis gravitas sounds so awful!

i was in the maternity ward of one of the so called leading hospitals in the country. I am really disappointed. I have been treated much better in other depts of that hospital. I'm just unsure now what to do. I'm waiting on an appointment with a consultant: I'm hoping he'll whisk me off to a nicer more attentive unit. the deciding factor for me was ringing the emergency bell and someone not coming for 45 minutes.
Hopefully it will be a straight forward birth, and I dont need to spend too much time in there at all!

Private health insurance will only cover high risk pregnancies (eg pre eclampsia, ruptured membanes, breech). I have insurance and they won't cover me despite my baby passing away after birth from infection. Private delivery and post natal ward costs about 12-15,000 in London.

Even if you took out health insurance now, they may not cover high risk pregnancy unless you have held the policy for a year.
