Really what are the chances of my waters breaking without warning?

My mum thinks I should get a plastic sheet for my mattress but I thought you would get some sort of warning first. What are the chances of your waters going in the night with no warning? And do I need a plastic sheet?

Mine went three weeks early - the day before I was due to start mat leave. Was sat on bed on phone to my mum when they suddenly gushed, I said to my mum OMG my waters have gone, with that my mum hung up, broke the land speed record to be with me. All the time I was thinking - oh no, is it going to stain the carpet as Im trying to mop up the carpet in the bedroom, the stairs and the kitchen floor as Im running around trying to find the phone to ring my midwife.

I get to the car with my hubbie only to find that he's put black bin bags and towels on the seat while saying - well I dont what the leather ruined!!!!!!!!!!!

GracieGirl · 21/09/2010 20:28

I hated the plastic sheet so put towels on top of it so I didn't feel the plastic. Waters went suddenly without warning. Pop... Gush ... all over bathroom floor at 3am during my many trips to the loo.

Ipom · 21/09/2010 21:10

I was alseep when it happened with my first - I was dreaming about water too.

With my second I got labour pains and then they broke while I was curled up on the sofa as silly o'clock at night witing for the neighbour to come and baby sit so I could go to the hospital.

Geocentric · 21/09/2010 21:23

Am Envy at water-breaking stories...
First baby - never went into labour, was c-section.
Second baby was born inside an intact bag of waters, OB broke it when she came out.

I agree with the disposable bed wetting sheets. Don't know if anyone has already mentioned it but I would recommend sitting on one when in the car. Apparently it can be v.expensive if they go when your driving or a passenger! Also, I found after my waters went (both in bed and both at 4am) the sheet was handy not to ruin the car seat.

All the best!

Only with my last pregnancy did my waters break, and that was only after I'd had a bath hoping to get things moving, as my other three pregnancies had been slow. So I was quite pleased really, but never thought of a mattress protector- sounds like a very good idea though!

Abubu · 21/09/2010 22:30

Yep, mine went gush while I was sitting in bed watching a film. I didn't feel anything apart from a sudden warm gush. After that it would come out in gushes every so often, rather than a continuous drip.
Bubba was born 9 hours later Smile

banana87 · 21/09/2010 22:35

Mine went on the sofa at 38+6....I had her 9 hours later...

cityangel · 22/09/2010 00:22

first time at 9 days overdue they were intact and significantly bulged during labour and were eventually broken by the midwife 30 mins before.

Second labour they started leaking slowly at 36 weeks

I guess it depends on how expensive your matress is and how hot it is for plastic sheets!

tralaa · 22/09/2010 00:52

Definately get some sort of sheet ( hippy chick ones really good- not crinkly!). The amount of liquor that comes out if your waters go properly can be quite shocking. With my first I was awoken at 5am with a 'pop' and moved so fast I made it to the bath without spilling a drop, then - Niagra Falls! Second time exactly the same thing happened but didn't move so fast so the bed got it! ( saved by a waterproof sheet!)

Must have a tough sack Grin Midwife 'popped' the fluid the first time, second one was born in a bag.. had spent a considerable sum on mattress protector gizmos too.

MeelooMouloo · 22/09/2010 13:50

DS1 went all over the bed in the early hours, good excuse for new bed though.

DD's didn't go until 5 mins before she arrived, Midwife was head down having a look at the time and got soaked as they went pop Grin

Would have laughed myself silly if it hadn't been for the labour pains. Poor midwife, looked like a drowned rat and had only just come on shift :)

MeelooMouloo · 22/09/2010 13:51

Incidently I'm 29 weeks with DS2, defo thinking bout mattress protectors now Grin

Butterbur · 22/09/2010 13:58

All three of mine had to be broken by the midwife to allow labour to progress.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/09/2010 16:46

Duchesse, what happened? Did your waters go in the church in public? Was it embarassing? Do tell the story!

MrsGangly · 22/09/2010 17:46

I don't remember mine breaking. They started leaking during the first stage and must have gone at some point when I was in the birth pool.

ParadiseRegained · 22/09/2010 18:51

I wouldn't invest in a rubber sheet, we bought some shower curtains from the £1 shop and lay those under our normal fitted sheet. Textbook labour says your waters will break at the end, I had a textbook labour so within about 30 minutes of mine breaking, my baby was born (and I had been in labour for 4 hours by that point). I didn't feel them going, but I was on all fours "in the zone", but I heard the pop! and as it was a home birth, the carpet took the brunt...

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/09/2010 19:06

mine went in the middle of the night -2 weeks before due date- they kind of 'pinged' and i got up to go to the loo to check-from then on it dribbled away- ds not born until4 days later- I did get out of bed before any damage was done to mattress

meggymegmegs · 22/09/2010 19:57

Mine went 3 weeks early at the bottom of the stairs with a gush, rushed upstairs and stood in the shower for a bit as they carried on flowing out. I would have definitely needed a mattress protector had I been in bed, but I hadn't thought about it at all at the time.

lateatwork · 22/09/2010 23:57

try puppy training mats. cheaper than the maternity ones and do exactly the same thing.
