newborn clothing for night time sleep?

Few questions... i'm 35 weeks and just wondering a few things...

What did/do you dress your newborn in for night time? (including blankets etc for moses basket)

We are currently living downstairs where the room does get very cold in winter: I have a groegg thermometer but how can we make sure baby stays at a good temp?

We don't know the gender so haven't gone over board with clothing until he/she is here...

  1. How many sleepsuits did you have ready for the first week?
  1. How many blankets?

Vest, babygro, 1 blanket (folded in half so equivalent to 2 blankets) - this was in March so still cold.

Babies are better off being a bit cold than too warm - something to do with SIDS risk. DD is now 6 months and refuses to sleep under a blanket at all, she wriggles out from under it Hmm but she's been fine, even these last couple of chilly nights.

We had about 10 babygros I think, and then two big cellular blankets for the cot, but we had about 6 little blankets for swaddling/moses basket.

Mine wore a vest and babygro day and night. Added cardigans etc for the day, then sheet and cellular blanket at night - added more blankets as necessary. (Ds was too small for those baby sleeping bags and in the end I never got into them, I was too used to blankets, so I don't know how it works with those).

I had about 10 vests and babygros and 4 blankets and sheets (the blankets didn't tend to need washing as often as the sheet under protected them from sick etc!)

December baby so vest and babygro and a swaddling blanket. Then a cellular blanket on top if need be. Remember a blanket folded in two is the equivalent of two blankets (again don't let your baby overheat)
The swaddle was great as it meant I could feed in the night and not have to unwrap DD totally.

I had about 10 sleepsuits and vests, 2 swaddles, 2 fleece sheets and 2 blankets. There is the potential for plenty of pooh, wee and vomit those first few weeks! Good luck.

Best thing ever for night time (in view of constant nappy changing and fiddlyness of poppers) is an old fashioned nighty. John Lewis do them - they call them 'baby bundlers' and they're about £6 each I think. They're just long with elastic round the bottom so just lift up when baby needs changing. They saved my sanity in the early weeks.

Oh, and re: sleepsuits and blankets... none! Shock I had DD 3 weeks early and she was born weighing only 6lb. I had a pack of Next sleepsuits in 0-3months which were silly huge and hadn't bought any blankets. DH had to go and buy a packet of cellular blankets from Tesco whilst I was in hospital as we had nothing at home. My sister bought us a starter set from Marks & Spencer in Tiny Baby size that had a sleepsuit, 2 vests, footed trousers, cardigan, long sleeved top and bib in it and we managed with just that for quite a while until she fitted into the newborn size things that we got as gifts.

I'd get maybe10 sleepsuits and bodysuits - then you'll have enough to get the washing turned round even if your little one is sick/does lots of poos etc. Sainsburys or Asda do nice ones at reasonable prices - I wouldn't bother with Mothercare clothes for baby as they are overpriced IMO.

We swaddled in Mothercare blankets but moved to grobags as soon as dd was big enough - much better if you have a wriggly baby!

I used the sleepsuits without legs - like a long nightie with elastic in the bottom. Best idea ever - have you tried doing up those domes with bleary eyes on very little sleep? I think we had 3 but I'm sure she used the odd domed suit occasionally when the washing didnt get turned around in time.

I used a merino & cotton sleeping bag - brilliant.

It actually washes & dried very quickly so we were able to do with one and DD wore it every night. DD slept it in summer & winter, though when she was newborn the bottom folds back over the baby for extra warmth. She slept on wool futon style mattress in a hammock next to me in bed so was very snuggly.
