Have suffered really badly with sickness this pregnancy. Wasn't actually sick, but lots of gagging, retching etc

It finally started to ease last weekend and I was hopeful that I would be able to go back to work, start getting into swing of things etc...

However, its now got even worse. I actually threw up the other morning and I can barely manage to do stuff in the house

Midwife said something about a hormone surge at 12 weeks...but I was expecting to feel better - not worse!

Help!

am prob not the best person to respond as have been sick all the way through this pregnancy (36.6 weeks)and taking cyclizine for it but in my first the sickness/nausea eased off at 14 weeks and my SIL's went at 18 weeks. I think it's quite common for it to last until 14 - 16 weeks so hopefully you are nearly there and will soon feel better

Jacksmybaby · 17/09/2010 15:33

I found weeks 12-15 the worst weeks in both my pgs. Was put on drugs both times at around 15 weeks. It REALLY doesn't help that everyone around you is telling you you should be starting to feel better now you've reached 12 weeks, does it?

I think I remember you were prescribed some drugs a few weeks back puss but weren't sure whether or not to take them... did you take them in the end?

ShrimpOnTheBarbie · 17/09/2010 15:36

I think it gets better by about 20 weeks. That was when I was 'glowing'. Before then I was a mess.

ILoveDonaldDraper · 17/09/2010 15:56

MIne got worse at about 12 weeks as well. Between about 9 and 11 weeks I was better and then it suddenly got much worse. Less nauseous feelings in my stomach, but constant gagging and retching. It started to get better at about 20 weeks but has persisted, albeit in a much milder and very bearable form all the way through (now 37 +1).
My anecdotal experience from speaking to friends is that although people perceive it likely to go away at 12 weeks, in fact a lot of people are stuck with it to 20 weeks.
If it doesn't settle down in the next week or so get a prescription for cyclizine or metaclopromide - these have been total life savers for me.

JillyCoopersJoyousOtter · 17/09/2010 16:15

Last time with DD, mine seemed to get worse and worse, peaking at 11/12/13 weeks then slowing down after that to 'normal' MS at 25 weeks. I do remember feeling slightly better at about 17 weeks, but the above weeks for me were the worst - as in I found it hard to even get up from bed.

I hope it eases soon for you OP, pregnancy sickness is awful and feels like its going to be forever. If you can get medication for it, take it, it makes hell of a difference. Best of luck.

PickleSarnie · 17/09/2010 16:29

Mine got worse at 11 weeks. This "12 weeks and it will all be over" nonsense is all bollocks I think.

If it's any consolation, mine peaked at about 11-12 weeks and then gradually decreased and I was feeling human by 16 weeks and able to eat non beige food for the first time.

Am sending get well vibes for you.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (

Mine started at 6 weeks, was worst around 10/11/12 and then got better until it finally stopped around 16 weeks. However, I'm now nearly 34 weeks and it seems to have started again. Retching in the mornings just after I get up and have been actually sick twice in the last 2 days. :(

angels1 · 17/09/2010 17:59

pussinjimmychoos I'm so sorry you're still feeling rough and I feel your pain - I was unbearable between 7 - 11 weeks and then had a week where i got a bitbetter - thought 'this is great, the start of the end of this' and then around 12 weeks I had a few days where it got REALLY bad again. Completely unexpected and everyone kept saying I should be feeling better any day (grr).

If it helps, with me it was just a handful of days. By 13 weeks it was a little better (as in not feeling like I was going to throw up any second all the time), and has gradually got better and better (although still on anti sickness meds). I'm now nearly 18 weeks and now can feel normal so long as I stick within certain parameters (eg eat often, take it easy, avoid stress, don't go out mnuch etc - i'm pretty restricted at life but at least I can get away with not feeling as bad). I still have good days and bad days though. My GP said it's completely normal for sickness to stay until 16 weeks, and lots of people it continues longer - she seemed to think at/by 20 weeks I'd see more of an improvement. I know it seems a long way off, but you are past the worst now, not long to go

Wholelottalove · 17/09/2010 18:30

Both last time and this pg my sickness was still peaking at 12 weeks. I remember feeling really despairing especially first time around as had been clinging on to 12 weeks. Both times it started easing around 14-16 weeks. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Northernlurker · 17/09/2010 18:36

Puss I'd missed seeing that you were pregnant. Congratulations! Grin

I agree with everyone else that up till at least 16 weeks is totally normal. Personally I was a full 40 weeks before I felt better...
Have you tried all the obvious things - ginger, peppermint, ice lollies, wrist bands?

littleshinyone · 17/09/2010 18:39

mine started at 4 weeks, peaked at 16 weeks, gone by 18 weeks - suddenly, as though a light was turned off- a friend saw me through my kitchen window doing the washing up and rushed in to congratulate me!!

I hope work are being sympathetic. i was vomming in the loos all hours of the day and night, but eased once occupational health took me off night shifts. I was lucky though that food (chips, usually) helped my sickness so I got to go to the canteen lots!!

its totally miserable, but DOES disappear, just not when all the books tell you!! Keep going, not long now!

littleshinyone · 17/09/2010 18:41

PS i agree- wrist bands were the only thing that seemed to help, whichinspired some acupuncture- which i think made a difference, even if not getting rid completely.

PussinJimmyChoos · 17/09/2010 19:37

Oooh lots of replies Smile

Thanks everyone - I can't tell you how soul destroying it is as I was really holding out for the 12 week mark Hmm

Its taking its toll as I've barely cooked for nearly a month now, DS has started school and DH having to do the school runs and leave work early as I'm just in a heap...was starting to get out and about last weekend and so thought I was on the up

I didn't take the Avomine prescribed....rather twitchy about it tbh
