Blood pressure increased from 110/60 to 130/78

Currently 31 weeks pregnant and my blood pressure has always been consistently low approx 110/60. Had a midwife appointment today and blood pressure has risen to 130/78. Midwife said this was within the normal range but I thought it was changes to blood pressure that was important? Should I be worried - my next appointment isn't until 34 weeks. Urine was fine so maybe I'm just a little stressed with work et al?

BP can vary from day to day, if you've had a crazy morning or if you're worried about something.

Mine was low like yours all the way through until 36 weeks then suddenly shot up to 185/125 Shock ! (Was obviously admitted that day, pre-eclampsia diagnosed... )

I didn't "feel" weird at all, no headaches or dizziness. I had odema in my ankles - but it was in the 30s that week and heavily pregnant women tend to get fat ankles! Wink Looking back though my face was very swollen too... so just keep an eye out for any of the other indicators and if you're worried phone her and get it checked again and your urine too of course.

I really wouldnt worry its the reading that is currently 78 that is the most important one and would only really worry if it was above 90 as that is consider high,, bet if they checked later on it would back to your normal range - I have a Bp machine and I check mine every morning and eve as I am slighly mad!! and mine can massivley vary.

I was concerned the other way so googled it the other day and found this:

www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/complications/bloodpressure/

"Your midwife will only be concerned if your blood pressure rises above 140/90. A single high reading may be misleading. Your midwife will usually take another reading just to be sure."

I wouldn't worry, bp tends to drop in 2nd trimester and then come up again during 3rd.

If it's over 90 WITH symptoms of PE then they check you out, if over 95 WITHOUT symptoms they check you out. (bottom number obv)

I would agree with SkiHorse, my blood pressure is naturally, scarily low... about 90/55. It was low all the way through my first pregnancy until I reached about 29/30wks. Midwife measured 130/70, still not in the high range but a big change for me. She wasn't concerned as no protein in urine. However, had major oedema - puffy everything, hands, feet, face. Had painful joints too, knees and knuckles.

My partner has BP machine so checked my BP at 33 weeks and it was consistently 140/90. Getting visual disturbances too. Went to antenatal day unit and they found +2 protein in urine. Stayed in hospital and preeclampsi escalated rapidly over a couple of days until I was delivered by c-section at 34wks.

Don't worry but keep an eye on your symptoms - increasing oedema, joint pain, rapid weight gain, headache, flashing lights, epigastric pain.

Bloodpressure often increases a bit in pregnancy. The first figure hops around a lot; it's the second that needs watching. Under 80 is completely normal and nothing to worry about. As posted above, over 90 is when bells should start ringing and you should be checked more frequently and keep a very close eye out for other symptoms. "White coat" syndrome - where your blood pressure rises just because of the stress of being tested is a well known phenomenon; stay as relaxed as you can and if you can, have appointments in familiar places not random stressy running late hospital visits.
