Is this a good deal for nappies and are Huggies newborn any good?

My local tesco has two boxes of huggies newborn (100 nappies per box) for £18. Is this a good deal - means you get 200 nappies and they are 9p each. Are huggies newborn any good? People have told me you use about 10 a day with newborns so this would last almost three weeks - is that right? Assuming average weight baby how long would they be in newborn nappies for?

Thanks

My larger than average weight baby (just over 10lb) was in size 2 nappies by 3 weeks.

Huggies are ok but they are very elasticated around the leg area and I found they sometimes marked my DC so had to be careful with doing the nappy up.

Pampers newborn are crap but my now 8 week old is fine in Pampers size 3.

Whilst I was pregnant I took advantage of all the "free" nappies offers and money off coupons with Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda/Boots baby clubs rather than buy a big box full - Had I bought a big box of Pampers Newborn I would have been well pissed off as I really didnt like them.

Its a tricky one - it is a good price, but there are a few points to consider:

  • not all babies are the same shape and not all nappies are the same shape. Huggies aren't bad nappies, but they may or may not fit your baby well - and if they don't fit well they won't be effective.
  • not all babies are the same size at birth. DD1 was 9lb 12, and we were into Size 2 nappies within a fortnight. Its not just the weight but also the shape - a tall baby might last in Size 1's a lot longer than a shorter baby of the same weight.
  • nappies are bulky.
  • some babies stop needing quite so many nappies quite early (its completely normal for a fully BF baby to do 1 poo a day or less once BF is up and running - so you'd need well under 10 nappies a day)

So, if you have the space to store them and you have a friend(s) that would buy the surplus off you if necessary then go for it, but there is a risk you'll wind up with 197 newborn nappies that don't fit...

After a good bit of trial and error, we have settled on the tesco own brand newborn nappies at the moment (still in them 6 weeks on).

I found huggies newborn rubbish for DS wheras pampers were brilliant

Lots of pople get on with them but I think it depends on the baby.

I would buy a packet of a couple of types to try and then wait until your baby is born - tesco ALWAYS have offers on pampers & huggies so you can always get a deal. Asda are also cheap for nappies and sainsbury's often have a baby event with good offers

trixie123 · 16/09/2010 13:03

Definitely wait and see before bulk buying. There are always offers on somewhere - worth going to Makro or Costco once you have settled on a brand or size. As others have said, your baby may suit one type or another and you won't know until he/she is here. Don't worry about it. In this age of 24 hour supermarkets you are never going to be caught out. My DP had to go out for formula at three AM the first night DS was home because we just didn't realise how much he would need and my milk hadn't come in yet!

Try real ones!!

Miles cheaper

Don't end up in landfill for 100s of years (really shocking how many a baby gets through, think it's 8 swimming pools full or something)

Easier than you'll think; the washer's banging away most of the time anyway; you can get biodegradable flushable liners to minimise poo contact; Some types (bamboo and fleecy) dry really quickly, i managed with no central heating/ radiators!

Better for baby (said to be good for hip development later on)

They're soooo cute! Smile

Check out this website, there's loads of advice and that...

If you do decide to buy some, check out e bay first, there's quite often new ones on there.

You probably think I'm mad to even suggest it, but really, if I can do it (twice) anyone can!!

Not full of nasty chemicals either....just google it...eeeek! Shock

I found Huggies fitted my boys better and my dd was better in Pampers.

TBH newborn size isn't used for long. DS1 and DS2 didn't wear newborn size at all. Went straight into size 1 but they were 11lb 4oz and 10 lbs respectively!

I did use newborn size with DD as she was a tinyy 8 lber! But only for a month at most.

LittleSilver · 16/09/2010 21:16

Yes that is a good deal. I won't buy over 10p per nappy.

But like someone else said, don't bulk buy til you know what suits your baby. All 3 of mine have happily worn tesco value to Pampers and Huggies without a prob, but other people I know cannot use lead brands due to rashes.

I do think real nappies are better, if you can find some that actually work. I used Mikey Diapers (2nd hand from sis) for DD2 for about 6 weeks; honestly, they were rubbish. I had to change them every 2 hours or DD2 got drenched.

I have had people say to me since, try a different brand, but honestly, who has the money to buy a load of different kinds?

MumNWLondon · 16/09/2010 21:17

Huggies leaked on my DS2, after 5 leaking nappies (wee) haven't bought again. My DS2 was 7 4 at birth and was in size one nappies for about 6 weeks.

Actually 9p a nappy for newborn isn't that great, when DS2 was born in April Boots had an offer I think that was closer to 7p a nappy. I was using around 20 a day at one point Shock (constant pooing and yucky nappy rash) so I bought supermarket ones that were closer to 5p a nappy.

I don't know where that ten nappies a day guideline came from. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a nappy manufacturer. That said, my DS barely pooed at all until we started weaning. Grin

Francagoestohollywood · 16/09/2010 21:35

I don't think we've ever changed 10 nappies a day, but yes ime Huggies newborn are very good.

yellowflowers · 17/09/2010 12:56

thanks all - that's really helpful. Ten a day came from a couple of friends of mine though to be honest they are the types who changed every hour anyway regardless of wee or poo or whether the baby seemed uncomfortable.

DD is 7 weeks old and weighed 7lb 3oz at birth - much prefer Pampers to Huggies, they just seem softer, and we've had a few leakages with Huggies. Unfortunately I still have about 50 Huggies to use up after buying a bumper box pre-birth! I will be trying some supermarket own brands when we start buying again though.
