Is there such a thing as pregnancy congestion?

I am constantly sneezing & blowing my nose - like I have a heavy cold, which I assumed I did have. It's been more than a month now and it's a real misery!

I feel really disgusting constantly sneezing & snorting...

My eyes are also constantly red and itchy - not sure if this is connected.

Anyone know if this could be pregnancy related?

Thanks!

Yes, there is. Lots of people complain of being bunged up when pg. In fact, lots of people complain of being bunged up both ends! Grin

Yes, you can get a seriously stuffy nose while pregnant.

IME, if you can imagine an ailment, then it's possible to suffer from it whilst pregnant. That's probably not helpful Grin

I understand that the body makes more mucous in general when pregnant, nasal congestion being part of this.

I had this with my son, who was born in early summer, so definitely not a winter symptom either.

Thanks - I sincerely hope it doesn't last until Feb - but it does explain why the darned 'cold' isn't going anywhere...

Your bodily fluids increase in general, so you can get stuffed up, also if it is a cold you'll produce more snot too-lovely!

In all 3 of my pregnancies I had a run of colds in the first few months, and the MW said it was because ones immune system is suppressed in pg, so easy to pick up everything going.

The things I found helped were - steam (get a humidifier - it is great for babies with colds) and saline nasal spray (Calpol do one, suitable for babies which is ok in pg). Also ok to take paracetomol if you are feeling coldy.

Yes it is possible. I have had it all the way through both my pgs the stuffiness can be due to increased size of blood vessels in the nose but mine is most definately an increase in snot. It's just wonderful to spend the most of the 9 months blowing my nose and sniffing.

I think the difference is it doesn't feel like a proper cold.

specialsmasher · 16/09/2010 09:20

lovely...! Though mine does - or did anyway - feel like a proper cold - less so now. I'll try your suggestions, thanks, Hazeyjane.

So much for blooming! Grin

Yes I had congestion, and catarrh, even when I didn't have a cold. I think it got a bit better after the first trimester though, so there is hope!

MollysChambers · 16/09/2010 09:27

Yes. Excess mucus is another of the many glamourous symptoms of pregnancy. Though not quite as bad as stress incontinence and varicous veins on the vulva. Grin

Could it be a sinus infection though? When I've had one of these, it feels like a cold that just won't clear Do you have a headache with it at all, especially when you lean forward?

specialsmasher · 16/09/2010 09:42

I have sinus pain a lot - and I have had headaches, but couldn't vouch for the leaning forward...

I had it a lot in pregnancy, I think it's really common.

doozle · 16/09/2010 09:57

Special, hmm, I'd get it checked by GP. If it is a sinus infection, it needs anti-biotics.

specialsmasher · 16/09/2010 10:05

Thanks for advice, doozle. I'll give it a day or so then make an appointment.

Yes, I apparently snore like an old man when I am pregnant!

lilmissmummy · 16/09/2010 10:47

:) I have this and my doctor has given me a nasal spray so it is not too bad!
