I have heard this but the other way round!

Won't say what ours was and what we had but I would imagine that info would have to be preset and totally unrelated. All the info which appeared on the picture, such as mother's name and DOB, was entered before the scan even took place.

Why would they need that information anyway if the parents didn't want to know (and we didn't)?

DancingThroughLife · 15/09/2010 15:08

None of our photos had either letter... could it just be something to do with the machine and/or printer??

mmm fizzpops intresting- i to didnt want to know, so thought i just wouldnt go on pic in any way but who nos! was urs a 'match' in terms of letter and gender?

It seems unlikely to me. As far as I know, they are reluctant to commit to anything re the sex from a scan alone (instead of for eg amnio or CVS) because they can't be 100% sure. On my scan report it says "genitalia appears female" (!)

In any event, I think it would be unlikely for a girl to be Y because I seem to remember from biology that XX denotes girl and XY denotes boy.

fizzpops · 15/09/2010 17:19

Well it is a match as far as what you heard goes, but not as far as what I heard from someone else goes. There is a 50/50 chance I suppose.

We didn't want to know so it seems unlikely that they would have gone to all the trouble to look - especially as it so hard to tell, I am talking about 13 week scan here! - and then put a secret code on the scan pic which tbh we are the only ones who are really interested in.

I don't think they keep a record of the pics somewhere which they use to match up post-birth to monitor the accuracy??? Seems a bit elaborate when just asking the parents what they had been told would suffice - no-one has any reason to lie.

i think it probably relates to something other than gender. i am prety sure that if it was written, it wouldn't be in those terms (because of what i said above) and i am also pretty sure that - as you say - they wouldnt have written anything on it if you said you didnt want to know.

clarabellarocks · 15/09/2010 17:49

Doubt it. Not sure but could it relate to axis of measurement? X and Y are usually the two lines on a graph.

prettysunset · 15/09/2010 21:29

I'm a Sonographer and have never even noticed there IS an 'x' and 'y'Confused!! Will look in the morning but no, it has NO relevance to sex!!! Xx

1Catherine1 · 15/09/2010 23:06

Well I guess that solves that mystery. Your friend is telling fibs! Surely a Sonographer would know.

sophieandbelly · 16/09/2010 07:43

ah thanx i thought it was crap!
