Newborn bedding

I am sure that this has been done a million times and so, apologies, but I haven't found an answer to my stupid questions...

I am a first timer and was wondering what I need other than a fitted sheet for the moses basket.

I have been given one of those sleep sack things which you zip the baby into (I wish they did them for adults Grin ), but have also been told by friends that their new borns liked to be swaddled (I have also got a swaddle blanket thing).

The sleep sack looks like it might be too big (long) for the moses basket?

Also, do they really use the sacks from newborn (it says 0-6 months but looks huge)?

And if you swaddle, is that it, or do you also have a little blanket as well? (Have got a cellular one.)

I am sure there are many different ways of doing it, but as a newbie I would welcome any tips from experienced ladies!

I am almost 35 weeks and it is dawning on me that I might actually need to know some of this stuff now Confused

Thanks

hey KFW (wave) we used the sleeping bags with DD from about 3 months and only when she moved over to the cot so just swaddled her until then with a cellular blanket. Have got some proper swaddling blankets this time which I plan to use. If it gets cold then I just put another blanket over the top and tucked it in well at the sides.

I used to have little fleece blankets and just use them like a quilt..but i would tuck them under the moses basket mattress so they would stay in place.

Another alternative is to swaddle them then depending on how cold it is put a cellular blanket over it and again tuck them under the mattress.
I didnt use the sleeping bags until ds's were about 6 months old.

I'm 33+4 and im planning on doing this again Smile

Aha. Thanks guys (hi Hev!). Those sleep sack things look wayyyy to big for a newborn (I hope!). I don't really get how/why it says 0-6 months. My DH held it up against his torso this morning and it practically covered him to the waist (he's not short either!). He couldn't fit in it though obviously. (And no, he didnt try!)

Swaddling it is then, with a blanket if necessary. I bet she'll look really cute Smile

Hi [waves too].

Some babies hate being swaddled (DS did). So you might have to go with the flow a bit.

We used sleeping bags from when DS weighed enough to go in them (I think most of them are from 7lb upwards). It doesn't matter that they're too long (it just matters that the top bits fit snugly enough that they're not going to slip down inside the bag). You can just tuck the spare bit up and around at the bottom.

I have just been hanging up all DS's old sleeping bags to dry having washed them ready for DC2 Smile.

p.s. Also, you don't need a special swaddle blanket to swaddle, you can do it with a normal cellular blanket (MW will show you how but basically: put it diagonally, fold down top corner where baby's head will go, put baby on it, fold the sides across each other and tuck under, fold in bottom corner).

I used gro bags from birth but then my DD was 9.5lber!

There was quite a bit at the end but I used to either tuck it under the matress a smidge or if it was a cold night (born in feb) would fold it over her feet a bit.

My DD was a hated being swaddled girl! She is now 7months and still just about fitting her grobags 0-6 months but will be out of them soon so we have a couple of 6-18months and they are enormous again! Thankfully winter is coming round again so will do same again!

Interesting...thanks ladies. The things that I will have to learn!

To be honest, the amount that she kicks and wriggles around does suggest to me that she is keen to get out and therefore may not be a swaddling girl either! I guess I'll just have to wait and see Smile

(hi jacks!)

We used a sleeping bag from day one, and found it worked perfectly like this for the next 2.5 years :)

I just found it all so much easier, cos you dont have to worry how many layers they have on, etc.

BTW use pillow cases not special sheets for your moses basket, much cheaper :)
