Ridiculous Heartburn - any tips?

I'm 27+3 and have been suffering with heartburn since about 20 weeks. I'm reduced to swigging Gaviscon from the bottle - does anyone have any tips?!?

Right, you need full fat organic milk. Semi skimmed doesn't work and for some reason can actually make it worse.

There was a thread on here about this a while back and the consensus was that full fat milk works better than gaviscon.

When I was pg with Dd I was going through gaviscon in the night by the bottle full but with my second pregnancy I just used full fat milk and had a glass by my bed at night.

It works!
Try it!

icandoit · 15/09/2010 21:18

Interesting - milk worked for me

careylouwho · 15/09/2010 21:29

MadameCastafiore Is it reflux when you get burning in your throat - I've been calling my thing heartburn but it's actually burning in my oesophagus just above my collarbone IYISWIM. Mine has escalated quickly. It started just in late evening about a week ago but has progressed to all day today and started just after breakfast this morning :( It is very painful.

have a magnum ice cream before bed, honestly!

anonymousbird · 15/09/2010 21:33

I just drank gallons and gallons of milk.

The good news is, however, (for me anyway) having suffered with absolutely horrific heartburn for the second half of my first pregnancy, awake through the night and everything, right up to labour, I was in agony for labour and agony for heartburn. The second, literally the second the baby came out, the heartburn went. Dead. Stop. Just like that. It was quite extraordinary.

So, sorry it's a way off, but I do hope that happens for you like it did for me..... Smile

anonymousbird · 15/09/2010 21:34

Ditto the full fat milk option. None of your mamby pamby green or red topped stuff will cut the mustard.

mummytowillow · 15/09/2010 21:37

I suffered to, went to see consultant and she gave me Ranitidine, she was pregnant too and was taking it herself! So felt better about taking it, worked a treat to!! Smile

Lizzzombie · 15/09/2010 21:43

I'm 30 weeks and have had heartburn since 14 weeks. Its now gotten really bad. I am on Ranitidine (sp?) from the doctors, but its not really working, I have an appt for Friday to ask for something stronger. Apparently there is something else available.

Gaviscon is the only thing which relieves (short term) the actual heart burn for me. I have a large prescription bottle in the bathroom & a smaller bottle in my handbag for swigging from. Classy.

Frutin were rubbish when I tried them.
Tescos own brand fruit flavoured rennie type tablets are good for short term effects.

I have found that fizzy water helps me a bit. (it sort of forces a burp out early if that makes sense).

I sleep with a bean bag behind my pillows at night time to keep me propped up.

Heartburn is ruining my life! I am sooooooo hungry. Can't wait for this baby so I can actually eat again.

Lizzzombie · 15/09/2010 21:48

Opramazole - thats what I was hoping to be prescribed.

Also, apparently, the more alkaline foods you have, the more acid your stomach naturally produces to counteract it. So, I have been trying to eat lots of salt and vinegar rice cakes & crisps to try and eat more acidy food to raise the alkaline level instead. (I have no idea if this is correct thing to do or not!) I am one step away from eating a lemon though...am desperate!!!

MadAboutQuavers · 15/09/2010 21:48

I've had indigestion and heartburn since week 20 - am now approaching week 33.

I was taking Gaviscon tablets by the bucketload (the liquid is fecking awful), but I started with reflux last week and the discomfort was such that it prevented me from going to sleep at all.

Enter Zantac 75, also known as ranitidine. It's nothing short of miraculous. Wish I'd known about it weeks ago!

warthog · 15/09/2010 21:50

omeprazole.

or zanprol for the otc version.

absolutely amazing.

warthog · 15/09/2010 21:51

should add: i have taken it and am taking it all through pregnancy but you really should consult a doctor beforehand.

FrameyMcFrame · 15/09/2010 22:03

Full Fat Milk!
It's better than drugs.

Anoymousbird, I had the worst heartburn during labour too, it was almost more painful than the contractions themselves!
Wonderful when it stops though!

warthog · 15/09/2010 22:07

ha ha

full fat milk is like throwing petrol on the fire.

ronx · 15/09/2010 22:31

Ice cream

Well, it worked for me ...

jennifersofia · 15/09/2010 22:41

I feel your pain. I had it with all three of my pgs. Gaviscon didn't work, nor did milk, but I found Zantac very helpful. First thing I did after I gave birth (literally, 1/2 an hour after) was gleefully throw away the gaviscon bottle.

woahthere · 15/09/2010 22:45

a whole packet of love hearts...honestly it works...you'll see!

HoopsAndBaby · 15/09/2010 22:59

I heart Rennies too......they were the only thing that stopped my horrible acid burps.......god just cringed at the memory Grin

I take Omeprazole and it hepls :)

TheBossofMe · 16/09/2010 05:38

gaviscon sucks, rennies are better.

If it bothers you at night, don't eat too late and sleep with an extra pillow (I had to sleep sitting up towards the end of my pregnancy)

I love this thread I am going to try all of it, I have such bad heartburn that it wakes me up at night. I have Rantidine (sp?) from the doctor but only on one dose a day. I eat Rennies by the packet and drink tons of gaviston.

I asked my midwife before about it and she said not to eat and drink at the same time. Small meals little and often and not too close to bedtime. Loads and Loads of water.

BUT my throat is now sore from the reflux :(

Going to phone the doctor AND try everything on this thread!

porcamiseria · 16/09/2010 09:45

do just that drink gaviscon, and avoid tomatos and acidic food!
