Iam really worried I might have a huge baby.. 21 week scan showed large head Ang long legs so have to go back for growth scan at 34 weeks dd1 was long and 7.8 but with different father.. Dp is 6ft 3 and I'm 5ft 9.. Exh was 6ft..showed dp photo of me 1 week before dd was born and he said I'm that size now.. Dd did have big head at was 57cm long.. This baby weights 1lb at 21 weeks.. Am I likely to have 9 plus pounder? Not sure I can do that naturally as had 3 degree tear with dd and ventouse .. Any advice

Not sure if this helps at all but I am 5'6'' and DH is 6'5''.

DS1 was an extremely long (also 57cm) but a, thankfully, relatively skinny 9lber. I also had a (less severe) tear and a ventouse delivery.

With my current pregnancy, DS2 had a head measurement on 98 centile and a big tummy, shorter this time apparently at the 21 week scan. I haven't been referred for growth scans or anything like that but now (at 29 weeks) measuring slightly big for dates. The midwife has assured me that now DS1 has been through it has paved the way for DS2 and it is likely to be a much easier delivery this time.

A friend of mine who is a similar height to you delivered a 9lb 13 baby first time - ventouse and 3rd degree tears and second time had a 10lb 13 baby with barely any tearing.

Talk to your midwife about your concerns, hopefully (s)he can reassure you.

If you run into difficulties they will perform an emergency caesarean.

It is my fear to have a huge baby too as my bump is massive. I have now resigned myself to tearing or having an episiotomy. I figure if I get an epidural, I won't be able to feel it anyway.

just hope I get the epidural.

Sort of had my heart set on trying to being as natrual as possible this time.. But hoping that if my body did it once it will do it again.. Just worried about head being above the 90th or 95th centile which ever one is the biggest and know I will see estimated weight at 34 week scan and panic about how much bigger baby will get..

growth scans are notoriously unreliable btw, something like a 20% margin of error either way

there are lots of stories on here of people being told their baby would be 10lb and it being about 6lb

a friend of mine was told they HAD to induce her immediately at 38 weeks because her baby was sooooo big.
she refused. had him at 40 weeks. 8lb.

mine have all had giant heads and were all over 9lb, but all born relatively ok. your tear was prob due to the ventouse. i had the same with my first, thankfully only a 2nd degree tear, but similar situaiton

with my second (larger) baby i had him all naturally at home, no tearing. he had a bigger head too

and the third (and biggest) was born at home too in 45 minutes, and again no tearing

if you and the father are both tall/big then it's like the baby will be. but that's ok... photos are really hard to compare to people i think. so much changes in your body. i looked MASSIVE with ds2, but he was only 4oz bigger than ds1.
i looked smaller with ds3, and he was my biggest at 9lb 11.

Thank you :) makes me feel better hearing your story and knowing you had your 2 and 3rd with no intervention or tears .. And should remember with a 36 week scan with my dd they said she was already 7lb and would be around 9lb .. she was born at 40 weeks 7lb 8oz x

My situation is very different as I'm only 5'2" and DP is 6', but our baby was measuring really big early on but her growth has slowed down considerably. I had a growth scan at 35 weeks and now she's actually measuring relatively small. So you never know what's going to happen.

juliec26 · 13/09/2010 20:37

Really.. Suppose they do go through growth spurts .. But like I said those scans do get it wrong so think will try not to worry to much, but am guessing this one will be around 9lb.. Guess have to wait and see what they say at 34 scan x

Just want to add to the 'growth scans are notoriously unreliable' stories.
I had a growth scan at 38w and was told baby measured 7lb5 it was plotted on the chart and was told that it was on the 75th percentile. Was down for a VBAC but went overdue and ended up with ELCS at 40+5 and DD2 weighed 11lb 1oz. The lady opposite was having ELCS as she had been told she was having a 'big baby' and her boy was 8lb 11oz. I really wouldn't put much faith in a growth scan but want to wish you good luck.

nagoo · 13/09/2010 20:47

DS was 9lb7. I tore quite badly,, but I blame it all on the exit stance he adopted with hand up to his face on the way out. I'm measuring normal and had glucose tolerance test come back normal.

Does piss me off when people think it's funny to taunt me with 'second babies are bigger' all the time.

I'm going to avoid worrying about it, altough I feel bigger at 31 weeks than I did with Ds. I'm assuring myself that this one will be falling out in the 'luge position' like in the winter olypics.

juliec26 · 13/09/2010 20:49

Thank you .. I will take my growth scan with a pinch of salt and not read to much into it. Xx

My sisters have both ahd two babies and much shorter delivery times with the second. It definitely feels like my body has 'known' what to do this time (ie show bump earlier, braxton hicks, weird nipple lactation things), so following that logic, I like to think that dS has balzed a trail and things will be easier this time.

I'm 5' 5" and quite petite, but DH is 6' 3" and everyone in his family loves to tell me what a big baby he was, like a huge chubby buddha, how he was too big for a moses basket from birth etc etc.. I'm really quite worried about it now.

Went for an ultrasound today at 29 weeks and the doc didn't mention anything about his size, just saying how healthy everything was and how happy he was with the development.

As we were waiting in the 'debrief' room for the printouts, I said to DH, with relief, "well, at least they didn't say anything about the size, so he can't be unusually big". Only for the doc to pop in to drop off the printouts with the parting shot "Looks like he's going to be a big one!"
