colorectal consultant appt - what to expect

Due to a bad tear with dd during the birth I have been referred to a colorectal (sp?) consultant for some tests prior to a decision as to what would be the best way to deliver this current baby.

They were described as ultrasound and pressure tests by the consultant.

However, I would like to know a bit more before I go. Anybody else had to have these done?

Yes. I had a 3rd degree tear with DS and had to see the colorectal surgeon when DS was 8 months.

They put some sort of probe in my bottom and it looked at muscle damage etc. Didn't hurt at all. Then they looked at the pictures with me after. Wasn't bad and I was dreading it!

They used loads of lube, was over very quickly.

Good luck.

Oh the joys of childbirth and being a woman!

Thanks for the info. I think I was still in a little bit of shock after seeing the consultant who made the referral and forgot to ask what it involved.

I had a 4th degree tear with my 1st, and saw the colorectal surgeon at 7 months. I had the same joy of an anal probe and ultrasound-grim but I kind of zoned out and everyone was very sensitive.

Looking at the scan photos (an odd counterpoint to the baby scan photos?!) with the consultant was really helpful, as he clearly showed me the (tmi) ring of muscle and the bit I didn't have anymore just wasn't there. It gave me a visual picture to force me to keep doing pelvic floor exercises. I also crystalised plans for baby no 2 (now 26weeks) as it convinced me to go for a section to avoid further damage.

I was in shock and weirded out for the whole thing as well, and wish I'd taken someone else with me to listen and repeat back later (scan separate from consultant appointment so someone could come in just for the more analytical and less undignified bit). I remember feeling a bit stuck afterwards as there wasnt anything that could be done, but it definitely move us forward.

Hope you find it ok too

Also, the pressure test involved shooting air up your bum and seeing if you could hold it in-v.weird. In hindsight, it would have been sensible to have sone sort of wind remedy to help with more indignity later that afternoon!

oh god it just sounds delightful. thanks for the tip of taking someone else with me. i am going to organise that now because i am useless at remembering the details and asking questions in these situations especially if i have just been pumped full of air ConfusedShock

I gave birth 22/01/25 to my first baby girl and I’ve been given a colorectal appointment and would like to know if the will actually do surgery or if it’s just a look. Will it hurt and why am I so worried about it
