Pains in tummy at 5 weeks

I am 5 weeks pregnant today and have been having a dull pain. It is slightly above my tummy button and to the right. I did read somewhere that miscarriage pains are more like period pains and these would be a lot lower, is this anything to worry about or is it quite normal? xx

hi emmywoo. not sure what it might be - MC pains are like period pains, but you do get cramping like period pain in early pregnancy as everything starts to stretch and your body gets used to having a house guest.

unless you are bleeding, I wouldn't worry just yet and just put it down to one of the funny things you get in early pregnancy.

hope everything goes well for you - if you are still worried by Monday then go to your hospital's early pregnancy unit and ask for a scan to put your mind at rest.

Hi there.
I shouldn't let it worry you to much as it is quite normal to have pains early on in pregnancy i had exactly the same and was myself also worried at the time but everything was fine, but obviously if the pains get worse and you are still worried speak to your midwife, hope that helps and puts your mind at rest alittle.

Hi Emmywoo and everyone,
I am about 5-6 weeks pregnant and have experienced on and off abdominal pains. My GP says this is normal as my body is changing and stretching. However, I am worried that something will happen and keep thinking one morning, my period will start. It is also too early to have a scan and I have to wait for another 5 weeks or so. I have taken a second test just to make sure, and it was positive again.

I have been feeling unwell. I think it is too early for morning sickness and cravings. But I don't feel well after eating big meals and I feel a bit sick. I retch a lot but haven't actually been sick. Sometimes I crave for certain foods, then again it might be all in the mind. I have started to eat smaller portions of food and more often. It has helped a bit and feeling better today.

Any advice would be great, as I cannot talk to anybody at this stage.

aitchy and OP i too am 5 weeks pregnant and have this dull ache in my groin area and higher up, its more like pressure though TBH and am just putting it down to having something a little like a pebble in my groin area, this is also why i cant sleep on my tummy!
Every day from waking till about 11-12 ish i feel queasy and get hot flushes, am currently drinking milk to try to stop the dry retching (TMI sorry) especially cos im trying to hide being pregnant.
My boobs are also so heavy and tender.
All good signs i think but make it really hard to hide the pregnancy! How can somethign the size of an apple seed cause our bodies to change so much!

aitchyd, you can get morning sickness from any stage in early pregnancy - with my two it didn't kick in till about the 7th week, but I know people who've had it practically from conception. You're doing the right thing in eating a little and often, and you should only eat what you fancy. Don't force yourself to eat something just because it's good for you if you can't face it.

The abdominal pains are normal - weird, and scary, but normal. They can feel, like I said before, like period pain, but it's only if the pain is bad enough for painkillers, and accompanied by bleeding that you need to worry. And even bleeding is not necessarily anything to worry about it provided it's dullish brown in colour, and more like spotting than a proper period.

But if you have bleeding of any sort, go to your local hospital's early pregnancy unit for a scan to be checked out. It's always better to have your mind put at rest, or your worst fears confirmed, than to worry yourself to bits in ignorance.

and bonkerz, I had the dull ache in the groin as well - I think it's the uterus gradually working its way upwards to where it needs to be for the duration of the pregnancy. In any case, no one prepares for the absolute weirdness of early pregnancy, and the worst thing is not knowing what's normal and what isn't!

Good luck to all of you - I hope you all have lovely, healthy pregnancies, followed by lovely, healthy babies.

As has already been said, stomach pains are totally normal in early pregnancy. It's all the stretching of your muscle and ligaments to make way for your baby and also the embryo implanting in your uterus.

Also, you say that the pain is above your belly button? The baby, at this point, is nowhere near here. It will be really low down in your pelvis (or thereabouts) so I doubt that the pain near your belly button would be anything to do with the baby anyway. Possibly due to your muscles though.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile
