Sore Ribs, how do I relieve them?

Basically what it says on the tin, I've got that wonderful bruised rib feeling down my sides and the front and it's starting to get to a point where it's constant. Has anyone got any tips as to what I can do to ease the discomfort off a bit?

Thank you.

No advice, but watching with interest as I have this too, I'm 34 weeks and the only thing that eases it slightly is lying stretched out on the settee or bed (on my side) with my hands over my head, obviously no good at all throughout the day while at work, and still have 2 weeks to go.
I'm also a little more comfortable in a reclining chair, although with a posterior baby, have been told this is the worst position to be in!!
Do you find you are out of breath too? I'm hoping this, and the rib pain will ease when the baby starts to engage.

No advice but i too am suffering and very out of breath when I lie down. Last time I found it eased when the baby engaged.

Sitting up very straight in a chair helps and leaning slightly back and to the opposite side of the paain, I've found. I'm already getting sore ribs and I'm only 20 weeks. Dreading the discomfort to come!

I have a trapped nerve in my back due to my ribs. The osteopath I am seeing for my SPD has given me these breathing exercises. It doesn't cure it but does relieve it for a while.

Lay on your back (slightly propped if that's more comfortable) with one of your arms stretched out. Breath in for a count of 3 making sure that you engage your diaphragm thereby expanding your ribs, hold for 3 then breath out. Then breath in for 4 hold for 4, then 5, 6 etc. upto 10 max or as far as you feel comfortable.

I went to nhs reflexology the other day and what I thought was (constant) pain from baby digging into my ribs turned out to be something totally different (I just can't remember what right now - damn baby brain!). The woman (who is now my hero) pressed some bits on my foot and it's been fine ever since! Can't wait for my next appointment now.

Always worth checking aches and pains with midwife. Dont want to be alarmist, but rib pain for me turned out to be pre- eclampsia. For most its just all that stretching going on, but do just check.

Tootlesmummy · 11/09/2010 20:06

I had that when I was expecting DS and it was because he was bum and feet down so his head was pressing up and right into my ribs. It was so sore that sometimes I wanted to cry!
I found laid out on the floor for a while with my arms stretched over my head helped.
Not much help as you can't do this all the time!

No advice from me either, but I have it too... Seems particularly strong after standing for a while, has anyone else found that?

mum2oneloudbaby · 12/09/2010 17:30

Yes, Scaltini. Mine is always worse if I stand too long. That is what made me go to the drs and the fact that the top of my bump felt numb and tingly at the same time.

30 weeks and I have the most awful pain in my left hand side below my breast.

Someone recommended arnica - I haven't tried it myself as was going to ask the midwife if it was OK first.

Really good posture seems to be the only things that helps.

It is unbeliveably painful sometimes though so I can only sympathise.
