So this sickness malarky?

Seriously I'm sick in the morning/afternoon/evening/night - I'm just off 6 weeks and this is not fun.

I'm trying to make myself eat because I'm so wiped out but it just seems to make me sick a hour or so later. I'm not even hungry (not like me at all!).

Top tips for hitting the nausea and vomiting on the head?

rest as much as you can. really, it is the best way to deal with it. Sleep, or sit/lie down whenever possible.

Eat, small and often, but more importantly, drink liquids, sip water, or suck ice cubes/lollies if you cannot drink water.

Apples are great anti-emetics. If you cannot bear to chimp on one, cut one into little bits and nibble. Ginger is meant to be good, but in my last pg if anyone so much as mentioned a ginger biscuit to me I would have them Grin. Camomile/peppermint tea also helps, if you can bear it.

Cut down/cut out caffeine as that can increase the feeling of nausea, same with smoking or being around smokers, the smoke can increase nausea and sickness.

Eat a breadstick or two and a sip of water about half an hour before you get out of bed. Part of the morning nausea might be low sugar levels, but whateer the reason, a little food digesting before getting out of bed always helped me marginally.

and really, sleep lots. You might find you have to be in bed stupidly early each night, do not fight it.

tbh I don't think anything cures it. I'm 16 weeks and although it's tons better than a month ago, I stil feel sick when I do much or get hungry or tired. I've been on anti sickness meds since 5 weeks but still had terrible nausea, so even medicatioon isn't the miracle cure I thought.

Only thing that helped me was constant grazing on what I could manage, sipping drinks slowly, resting alot, getting around slowly, sea sick bands. I did what I could but it was still bad - you'll get fed up with people suggesting ginger. It helps some but it doesn't touch it when it's constant and bad. People still suggest it to me like I hadn't thought of it in the past 3 months!

Good luck and hope it improves.

angels, what meds are you on? I was on cyclizine and did not find they helped much at all, so at around 22 weeks I was put on metaclopromide, helped much more, although, tbh, my sickness stayed for the duration Sad. at first, when i first changed to the one just mentioned, I had to have a suppository anti-emetic because I was sooooooo sick I could not even hold the meds down. Was given one under the tongue to melt, and the taste made me vomit.

oh and labmonkey please do not be frightened by what I just posted, it is very unusual for sickness/nausea to continue much past 12-14 weeks at the very most, once the placenta kicks in it tends to ease off, if it has not already.

LabMonkey · 08/09/2010 19:57

Thanks so much - I'm armed with ginger snaps (usually work when I'm sick) and I'll stock up on apples for work.

Congrats!!

My advice is to eat lots often. I personally found the worst thing was to get hungry cos if I did I felt much much worse and I didn't / couldn't eat making me feel even worse etc etc.

For me at least maintaining my blood sugar levels was v important to not feeling like I was going to retch. I personally found carbs and high calorie foods the best but high sugar foods that spiked these levels such as chocolate made me feel truly awful.

It will past eventually- about week 12 - 14 but when you're throwing up and it's only week 7 not much consolation:)

I'm trying to look on the bright side - probably a good thing for me not to want to eat - for once! Sip drinks/nibble food very slowly. And drink every time you eat it makes it easier to bring back up Oh, and don't forget - it'll be worth it all in the end! Smile

I was like this - I was signed off work for months.

I would get up in the morning and make two breakfasts because I knew the first one would not stay down!

Nothing helped me - it was made worse by the fact that it was Christmas time and there were all these M&S food ads on....

All I could stomach was dry toast, fruit salad, fizzy water and ginger ale.

Meglet · 08/09/2010 22:18

I was sick from about 7-11 weeks in my second pregnancy. Only ice cubes would stay down (water came back up) and I was told off by NHS direct as I wasn't having nearly enough. The GP prescribed Avomine pills (a travel sickness pill IIRC) and they helped. They make you feel very sleepy though so all I could do was take one in the evening, quickly get my dinner in me, go to bed, each some breakfast then wait for the next evening to eat again. I was off work too for a few days.

I remember I was sick in the garden, on my duvet, the floor, everywhere TBH... a nightmare few weeks Sad. Lots of washing Hmm.

LabMonkey · 09/09/2010 07:08

Wow - I definitely have nothing to whinge about! Yesterday was the first proper ill day and I think I was shocked by how much I threw up. I'm trying bananas, apples and wee breadsticks at work today (got to try to make it not obvious).

ah yes fizzy water. That helped but could not be cold. Cold made me vomit. Although, tbh, everything made me vomit this last pg. I was off work for much of it, and when I did return with the support of OH, I went back on reduced hours/reduced workload, I facilitate drug awareness groups that 2.5 hours as (one aspect of) my job but just could not cope with that long not being near a toilet!
