Am 14 weeks pregnant with dc2. With dd, I felt horribly sick for the first 16 weeks, but never actually was. This time, I have so far suffered right through with what feels like a huge lump of phlegm in my throat, which seems to set off my gag reflex and make me sick. I am trying to avoid dairy, as I know that can increase mucous build-up but the most ridiculous things can make it worse - the absolute worst thing I can do is to drink a glass of water, this is guaranteed to make me instantly sick! The only thing I can really drink and keep down atm is diet coke Hmm Chocolate and anything salty are also no-nos.

I have found that chewy Rennies can help to stave off the feeling for a while, and if I chew gum that also keeps it at bay, but not for long enough! Just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this and if you have found anything that helps at all. Please tell me that it will not last the full nine months!

I had horrible nausea for the first 12 weeks. After that I didn't feel sick in my stomach, but felt really sick in my throat if you know what I mean? I was constantly having to fight the urge to gag. I wouldn't describe it has a phlegmy feeling, but it was as though something was constantly triggering my gag reflex. It started to go away at about 20 weeks. I took anti sickness tablets which helped it, as did eating little and often. Sucking a sweet or something also helped, as did ice lollies.
I know other people who have had the same thing when pregnant so its not just us!

Yes I know exactly what you mean! You are describing just how I feel, that constant urge to gag. Nice, isn't it?!

Glad to hear it went away for you, hope it does the same for me...

Yes i know exactly what you mean!! It seems worse in the morning, after waking up thirsty with a dry mouth. And yes drinking water makes it worse.

I found sucking on hard boiled sweets seems to help especially if i'm out and about.

And eating things like grapes and other juicy fruits. I didnt know that dairy made it worse, guess i'll have to cut back on my morning cereal.

I'm with you on the diet coke, the other thing i've found to drink is fruit juice with tonic in it. Juice on it's own i think was too acidic and made me sick, and i think the fizz helps.

Any other suggestions welcome, as i'm really struggling with this!

Hi Canoe

have been avoiding fruit as I just don't feel like it - I seem to get aversions rather than cravings when pregnant - but will try some grapes today!

Hope you feel better soon Smile

Ah, not just me then. I had nausea in the early weeks, but since about 11 weeks (now 17 weeks), have just had this horrid phlegmy gagging thing going on in the mornings, but stomach actually feels fine. Am a bit p'd off with constantly hanging over the loo first thing when it's not actual 'proper' morning sickness as such. The rest of the day it's 'there' but I am not actually gagging.

Haven't found anything that helps yet (and I am eating loads of fruit), but it does tend to go away once I eat something, as if I am just convincing my throat things are meant to go down it not come back up.

It's gross, but good to hear that it should go away eventually.

Incidentally, I am really enjoying tonic water, not noticed whether helps or not, but it does taste and feel very fresh and like the 'anti-phlegm', so maybe it does help!

Sorry if this post is grim(mer than the others!).

Hi Deliaskis, how are you with hot drinks? I found that herbal teas or just hot water with lemon/honey was good to get rid of the gack at the back of my throat. Anything with dairy, including chocolate, was out for me.
Fruit ice lollies were good too, but can be a bit harsh on your tummy.
Thankfully now 32w and can eat and drink pretty much whatever (although in small amounts), so hopefully it will pass soon for you too.

I am drinking tea and fruit tea with no milk and they're OK, but it doesn't go away! Trying to avoid too much dairy but it's difficult as am having major cheese cravings!

Haven't tried lemon/honey but at this stage am willing to give it a go!

Glad you're better now, I am sure mine will clear up sooner or later.
