Well it finally got the better of me today. Threw up my breakfast while poor ds cried in his cot.
I still feel lousy. How do you get over the puking and get on with your day?

Ginger Ale/biscuits, eating little amounts throughout the day.

Morning sickness is worse on an empty stomach so any little snack is useful.
I found that with my first pregnancy (I had morning sickness 24/7 till the 6th month, then it was AM only) I couldn't eat any fruit/salads, or drink any water. I was stuck eating bagels and baked potatoes!

With my second I was sick slightly less often and could actually snack on fruit, which was a nice change!

I just found out that I'm pregnant again and am dreading the morning sickness.

Good luck!

I'm trying biscuits and Ginger ale in small amounts. Not feelig much better tho. Maybe it's just a bad day for morning sickness and it'll be more manageable tomorrow.
It's miserable tho! :(

You poor thing. Try to eat as regularly as you can, especially first thing. If certain foods make you worse then avoid them. How old is your little ds? Could you take him with you if/when you are sick.

Booboobedoo · 08/09/2010 12:34

Massive sympathies mrsflux.

Unfortunately different things do/don't work for different people.

How many weeks are you? And how many times a day are you being sick?

I was hyperemetic in my first pregnancy, and it was horrendous.

Pretty sick until about seventeen weeks with this one, so I handled it thus:

  • We broke the bank and got a cleaner.
  • I started buying more ready-to-eat food for DS (as a temp coping measure) and did all my food-shopping online
  • I accepted all offers of help from everyone
-DH got up with DS every morning to give me more rest
  • I forgave myself for being temporarily shit.

Keep telling yourself: this too shall pass, and I am growing a sibling for my DS.

Congratulations btw!

Cheers all! Ds is 17mo so prob not great to have around while puking he'd only try climbing the bathroom bin or stickin his hands down the icky loo!
I was hoping I could just do the constant queasy feeling I've had so far. It was rubbish with ds too so know I'm probably stuck with this till 20weeks! :(

This was my first puke btw. Managed to hold it in before. Don't think I can do any of those things boo. Weirdly it was better while I was at work mon and tues this week. Perhaps I need to be busy so I can distract myself.
Ds at home is hard work but different to a day teaching.

I read this tip in a magazine and thought it sounded crazy, but I was desperate, so tried it and it really helped. So I used to carry around a little bottle of lemon essential oil, and sniff it when I felt sick. Something to do with the acidity of the lemon I suppose. Might be worth a try.

Mahraih · 08/09/2010 13:00

mrsflux

It sucks when you throw up, doesn't it - difficult to get on with things.

I find that a quick lie down and a few sips of lemonade helps take away the feeling, and also getting control of temperature as that tends to go a bit whack when I throw up, either by opening a window or turning on the heater.

Lemon juice helps, too, with a little sugar.

And when I had morning sickness in the morning (its now in the evening!), I simply didn't eat until 11am, unless it was light fruit like apples, and that helped.

vjoy · 08/09/2010 17:11

sickness and nausea started on Friday for me.

I've tried small meals; one of the few things I can eat is white bread and apples. As soon as I get up from the sofa the nausea starts again. Got the bucket next to me wherever I go.

Been off work for the last three days. How does anyone continue with day to day life whilst not being able to eat properly?!

PussinJimmyChoos · 08/09/2010 17:20

I sympathise with you

Am 11 weeks pg with DC2 and have been off work these last weeks as have had severe sickness. Not actually thrown up but loads of dry heaving, gagging etc

Tbh, its really just a case of time that takes care of the sickness but what I'm finding helps is to eat little and often, eat what you fancy and don't worry about balanced diet etc - got given a leaflet about healthy eating for mother and baby when was making booking appt and I just binned it.

I have had to put DS (4) in nursery full time so that I have been able to just rest up in between eating, have been wearing sick bands, ginger biscuits, crackers - you name it I've tried it

Funnily enough, the morning that I ate left over cold quiche for b'fast, washed down with Pret Ginger Beer was the morning where I felt quite reasonable - perhaps the secret is grease and fat in manner of hangover cure Confused

You have my sympathies and I hope it passes soon!

Scout6 · 08/09/2010 17:39

My mum supplied me with travel sickness wrist bands and peppermint tea, after suffering several weeks of extreme nausea and trying various other remedies, the sickness has decreased significantly since I've been using them.

cakeslover · 08/09/2010 21:47

I'm currently living on bagels, blueberries, coca-cola extra cold from the can (not bottles) and fizzy water with loads of ice.
This is my 7th week, second pregnancy, and been feeling nauseous since week 5..
I'm just finding very hard to deal/entertain my 2.6 years old dd. feeling so guilty on not doing my best Sad

Lozario · 08/09/2010 21:56

It's awful isn't it. News article today on the BBC about how not enough is being done to help when it effects so many women. My ds is 15 months and I'm 12 weeks-ish; I have been trying to get out of the house to soft play etc for him (nice soft mats for me to lie on!!) and I second all the excellent advice listed by Booboobedo - especially the acceptance of help - in my worst weeks I did literally nothing, couldn't even lift the baby, and just let my mum and MIL do everything.

Oh and don't be afraid to get anti-sickness pills from the doc; I'm on cyclizine now and it doesn't work miracles but it has seemed to stop the actual puking. Am still retching every time I open the fridge though!!

Hope it passes soon (for all of us!!)

PussinJimmyChoos · 09/09/2010 16:49

I think the problem is that people do not realise just how debilitating it is to be so sick...I haven't actually been sick but have felt so so bad and just laid in bed, snacking every hour or so in between dozing and gagging (and mnetting to complain about it of course! Grin)

It clouds everything and you cannot enjoy life. I used to happily do the weekly shop with DS and now, I can barely be in a food shop unless I have to as we need stuff for dinner

I hate the fridge with a passion because it makes me gag when I open it and also because I've been opening it so much due to the frequent snacking that I'm sick of the sight of it

I've lost my appetite and enthusiasm for food (and I am generally a foodie!) and yet I still have to eat a lot just to keep stomach quiet and have put on weight as a result as the only food that settles my stomach is carb-y stodge which, combined with lying down a lot does not love the hips, face or thighs!

I am dreading going back to work as I know if one person makes a comment about how MS is part and parcel of pregnancy or they never had it, or they had it and got on with things, I am going to stab them with my biro!!

Kazmog · 09/09/2010 19:06

I totally agree with you PussinJimmyChoos the fridge is my enemy... I am only 6 weeks but feel terrible 24/7 and on top of it have heartburn. I am living on bananas and fizzy water (with a bit of elderflower cordial in). At work yesterday somebody walked into the lift stinking of booze and I promptly started retching just about reaching the loo in time. Hope that it calms down soon as my last pregnancy was no where like this.

PussinJimmyChoos · 09/09/2010 20:23

Its awful and the very thing that ease your sickness - eg bananas, fizzy etc is what aggravates heartburn. I find cold quiche settles my tummy a bit but then get heartburn...on balance, I'd rather have the heartburn

It is pretty miserable though - have cried buckets these last weeks! Blush
