I am 37+2 today and have had a sweep, the consultant said my cervix was already 2 cm's was just wondering if anyone knows how effective a sweep usually is when the cervix is already opening? Do you think I will go into labour soon?

I had a sweep with DS2 at 40+2 weeks and had a show the next day, then went into labour the day after that. However, i didn't ask if cervix was already opening when she did it. It bloomin' hurt though! Good luck!

Crazyh, I don't know, but there is something called a Bishops Test and you score according to certain factors as to how successful a sweep will be (maybe an induction too, can't remember). I am sure being 2cm will help, although if it's not your first child then they say your cervix is not completely closed anyway? I had a sweep last time and went into labour that night (although had already had some mild contractions the previous night). Why did they do a sweep for you so early? (being nosey)

Crazyh, how did you get them to do a sweep so early? I was induced with my last pregnancy and really really want to avoid being induced again but my midwive said the earliest I could get a sweep was 38 weeks, and even at that I'll have to get the consultants permission. I'd like to talk them into 37 weeks too.

I had a sweep at 37+6, 2 days later I had my daughter so I think it was pretty effective for me Smile

Hey feeling quite positive although quite nervous now, really hoping it will work. Its my first baby so dont how much difference that will make to the effect of it. Baby is small and have lower than normal waters, so consultant advised it would be better for her to be born before 40 weeks, i have been showing signs of labour, back ache etc, and had a bleed last week, so i think the consultant wanted to speed things up to reduce any further risk to her.

Thanks crazyh, I thought it'd be a medical reason. Hope the sweep works for you. The backache, ect, sound like promising signs. Good luck. x

Hi all, so nothing much has happened yet much to my annoyance lol, I have had what I think to be a show, brown blood tinged discharge type stuff (sorry for the tmi). Is there anything else I can do too get things moving, I have raspberry leaf capsules which I know dont really induce labour but am still taking them hoping they will have an effect on the contractions when they finally appear, I have been walking about and bouncing on my gym ball. Does anyone know if evening primrose oil will do anything seeing as I am already 2 cm's?
Or does anyone have any other suggestions, im willing to try anything, I know it has only been about 12 hours since I had the sweep but im an impatient moo at the best of times :o

They mention evening primrose oil in the Ina May book, but I am pretty sure it is actually applied to the cervix, by a midwife? Reflexology? Sex? Dancing wildly round the living room for an evening? (so my friend says)
