One word
Gaviscon
You can get it on prescription from your midwife
It really is like the advert - mini firefighters putting out the burning in your tummy

Other tips are drinking milk if you can bear it
Avoiding acidic foods
and sleeping a bit more upright with pillows if you can.
HTH and sympathies

Rennie or Gaviscon work for me.

PaigeTurner · 07/09/2010 13:22

Fatty and spicy foods can make it worse. Drink lots of water which helps regulate acid production.

biglips · 07/09/2010 13:24

i had it with my dd2 from 36 weeks so i lived off on Gaviscon (bottle) and drink plenty of water

Bonners · 07/09/2010 13:37

You can get it free on Rx from your GP. They usually prescribe Pentac instead which is exactly the same as Gaviscon, just cheaper. Don't let them give you Maalox, it's a poor substitute!!!
I started out avoiding certain foods but at 38 weeks I eat anything I like and just make sure I've got my Gaviscon because everything causes heartburn these days.

Bonners · 07/09/2010 13:37

sorry, I meant PEPTAC!

japhrimel · 07/09/2010 13:41

I can't use Gaviscon (makes me throw up so defeats the point!) but use Rennie tablets.

Try eating smaller amounts, avoiding spicy foods and eating/drinking anything fast.

Gaviscon worked for me too. Big bottle on the bedside table and swigged as appropriate.

rollerbaby · 07/09/2010 14:36

I hate gaviscon and their tabs are rubbish. Rennies and Zantac are the best in my opinion. I keep mine by the bed and have a suck when I need to in the night or on the go. A bit more portable than a bottle too.

Eat little and often. Bread and fatty food seem to make it worse...

nattiecake · 07/09/2010 17:28

Ahh, it'll be the pizza that set it off then. I've managed to get to 36+2 without it and it hit with a vengeance this afternoon. My mum brought some Gaviscon tablets and they're awesome :)

sophieandbelly · 07/09/2010 18:14

gaviscon also makes me sick and i have it bad, preg women not ment to take zantac but dr said when its bad u can have the odd one and its instant relief would live on them if i could!!

kiwidreamer · 07/09/2010 18:40

Rennie chewables was my best friend for the last trimester with DS! The liquid stuff makes me gag.

threebt · 07/09/2010 19:01

Ugh, evil, evil Gaviscon. It is the mouthfeel equivalent of being groped on public transport. I feel violated every time I take it. It's like a limp handshake in a bottle.

But if you can master your gag reflex, it really does work.

Other than that, my husband swears by warm milk and honey. He isn't pregnant, but suffers badly from reflux when his wife forgets to pick up his prescription even though she promised from time to time) .

berrycravings · 07/09/2010 19:30

I find ice-cream works for mine Grin Not very portable though.

ndavy · 07/09/2010 19:31

Milk worked wonders for me. By the end I was drinking pints of it a day just to keep the heartburn at bay!

Applemuncher · 07/09/2010 21:06

I have had chronic heartburn for years (but not since I became pregnant oddly enough). I once had to go to A&E it was that bad and I was seen by a very pregnant doctor who recommended Zantac - she said she popped them like Smarties all through her pregnancy.

She told me to take 10 to get me started and then follow the instructions on the packet.

I'm not advocating you OD on Zantac but I would give your midwife a call (or your GP) and ask if you can take above the recommended dose just to get you started.

greyfurrybaby · 08/09/2010 08:04

If you can't bear the thought of Gavison then I've found that little pots of rice pudding really help. I often find myself eating a pot in the middle of the night when the dreaded heartburn strikes.

LondonL · 08/09/2010 11:34

i've found eating more slowly and sitting upright while eating helped keep heartburn at bay. i also laid off the citrus fruits, tomato sauces and fizzy drinks. Drank a lot more water. Also, popped gaviscon extra strength on bad days. sometimes i'd get heartburn first thing in the morning before i'd even eaten or right after drinking water.

Milk is a friend, too, as well as sleeping propped up with a few pillows.
Good luck!

sunfunandmum · 08/09/2010 11:42

When it really gets a grip, the only thing that seemed to work was Gaviscon. But, in the early days of heartburn, cucumber tea and raw carrots were pretty good! Also, fizzy refreshers help out if you are caught without anything else but are near a sweet shop!!
